The Chicago Transit Authority is seeking an Investigator to conduct internal and external investigations, analyze crime data, and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to enhance department security.

Position SummaryUnder general direction, investigates infractions by employees of rules and regulations, conducts criminal investigations of CTA‑related criminal activity, interacts with outside law enforcement agencies when required, and performs analysis of crime statistics regarding the Authority.
Primary Responsibilities- Conduct internal and external investigations and surveillance of individuals alleged to have violated criminal law, including employee rule and policy violations, in cooperation with local, state, or federal law enforcement.
- Collect and analyze crime data using a variety of tools, producing reports for management and recommending improvements to overall Authority security.
- Act as the Authority’s agent during civil and criminal court proceedings for security matters.
- Participate in training programs, seminars, and meetings to elevate investigative expertise.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field and five (5) years investigative experience, OR an associate degree with ten (10) years experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license.
- Extensive prior experience (10+ years) in law enforcement and investigations in the Chicago Metropolitan Area strongly preferred. Must have left agency in good standing with agency‑issued credentials.
- Previous experience in crime data analytics preferred.
- Requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods while operating a computer and related equipment.
- Involves extensive movement, including onto trains and moving along narrow catwalks and ladders of various sizes.
- Must wear applicable protective equipment.
- Service area requirement:
Exempt (Non‑Union) employees must live within the CTA statutory service area at the time of employment or within six months of starting employment.
- Advanced knowledge of CTA operations, rules, and regulations, coupled with investigative background knowledge.
- Detailed knowledge of Chicago Police Department databases and COMPSTAT principles.
- General knowledge of current security camera systems, technology, and interfaces.
- Strong oral and written communication and organizational skills.
- Good interpersonal skills for dealing with external groups.
- Customer service skills.
- Computer skills.
- Ability to work independently and with sensitive information while maintaining confidentiality.
- Working knowledge of accident investigation best practices.
- Collaborative skill set with other departments.
- May require extended or irregular hours (afternoons, nights, weekends) to meet deadlines or respond to emergencies.
- Must be available to respond to calls or emails outside regular work hours.
- Rotating schedule to ensure adequate coverage.
- General office environment with occasional travel to CTA, vendor, and transit property locations.
- Exposure to weather conditions, shop hazards, extreme heights, electrified third rail, and subway tunnel environments.
