Position Summary

The City of Chickasha is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Building Inspector to help ensure safe, quality construction throughout our community. The Building Inspector's role is to perform inspections and enforce all building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical codes adopted by the City; to assist in the administration of planning and zoning, sign, flood plain, and property maintenance ordinances and regulations; and to ensure that all codes and ordinances regarding construction, building safety and the general welfare of the community are observed.

Received and Exercised

Receives direction from the Chief Building Official and reports to the Community Development Director.

Essential Functions
  • Enforce all rules and regulations regarding flood plain administration procedures.
  • Perform inspections of construction sites during various stages of construction and remodeling to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Inspect foundation, concrete, framing, plastering, plumbing, heating, electrical installations and a wide variety of other building components.
  • Enforce building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and related codes at construction and remodeling sites.
  • Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate and resolve complaints regarding code or ordinance violations; implement corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
  • Prepare and submit reports regarding inspections, investigations and daily activities; report any potential problems to the Building Official.
  • Participate with a variety of boards and commissions; attend and participate in professional groups and committees.
  • Maintain all departmental records and maps.
  • Recommend substandard structures to the Building Official for action.
  • Perform code enforcement actions relating to inspections and complete follow through for compliance.
  • Coordinate nuisance abatement issues with Code Compliance Officers. Assist Code Compliance Officers as required.
  • Coordinate inspections with Fire Marshal or Health Officer as required.
Additional Duties
  • File and maintain maps and plats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Knowledge of

  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and Ordinances.
  • National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 and/or all adopted State and City codes.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Modern construction methods and practices.
  • Read and interpret various maps and blueprints.
  • Accepted safety standards.
  • Code compliance relating to building inspections and related issues.
  • Computer software programs including Microsoft Office, Word and others.
  • Must obtain all residential inspector licenses within two (2) years of hire; must obtain all commercial inspector licenses within four (4) years of hire.

Ability to:

  • Read plans for new construction or extensive remodeling projects.
  • Identify problem areas involving building inspections.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and effective communication skills.
  • Enforce a variety of City codes with firmness and tact.
  • Advise on standard construction methods and requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of building inspections.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Operate and maintain Blue Line machine.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Two years of experience in the building construction field as a journeyman plumber, electrician, carpenter or related craftsperson. Two years of experience as a building inspector. Commercial and Residential certifications are preferred.

Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade with Associates Degree in Construction or a related field. Additional…
