A Commercial Loan Officer facilitates business financing by evaluating and processing loan applications for commercial clients. This role requires a thorough analysis of a business’s financial health to structure loan packages that align with both the client’s needs and the financial institution’s policies. They are central to helping businesses secure capital for growth and operations. A Commercial Lender should have good customer relation skills and be able to listen, probe and offer advice on the selection of products to applicants, should have knowledge of underwriting and understand debt to income and loan to value ratios and how these affect the ability of the borrower to repay the loan.

A Commercial Lender needs to have good knowledge and understand the requirements and restrictions of each commercial loan program the bank offers. The Commercial Lender will communicate with applicants throughout the process of application, underwriting, closing, and beyond. Officer needs to know deposit products as well to offer options to borrowers for other banking services. Officer will need to know what documentation is required and work with the borrower to collect all required information.

This position will ensure adherence to federal regulations and establish goals for long-term portfolio growth.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Actively participate in business development by analyzing potential loan markets, developing referral networks to locate prospects for loans, calling on, contacting and/or visiting potential customers as well as current customers.
  • Approve loans within specified limits and refer loan applications outside those limits to Loan Committee for approval.
  • Meet with applicants to obtain information for loan applications and to answer questions about the process.
  • Analyze applicants’ financial status, credit and property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting loans.
  • Explain to customers the different types of loans and credit options that are available, as well as the terms of those services.
  • Review loan agreements to ensure that they are complete and accurate according to policy.
  • Ensure each loan submitted has the required paperwork, tickets, signatures, etc., to reduce the possibility of loss and assist in the efficient processing of the loan. Each officer will be responsible for working on his/her exceptions.
  • Submit applications to credit analysts for verification and recommendation when necessary.
  • Handle customer complaints and take appropriate action to resolve them.
  • Negotiate payment arrangements with customers who have delinquent loans.
  • Maximize profitability through fee income, including referrals for all other retail products, including trust, FRM, cash management and merchant programs.
Skills & Abilities Policy & Procedures

The associate will be responsible for abiding by the Employee Handbook as well as following procedures outlined in Bank policies and procedures outlined in the Policy Manual referencing his or department area.

Reporting Relationships

The associate shall report to his/her immediate supervisor for all work assignments, schedule variances, changes to procedures, exceptions to policies and any conflict resolution. If the immediate supervisor is not available, or that avenue has been exhausted, the associate shall contact the next level manager or exercise the open-door policy to HR.
