POSITION: Wildland Management Graduate Success Specialist
STATUS: Part-Time / Non-Benefitted / Hourly / Non-Exempt
COMPENSATION: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour
DEPARTMENT: Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER)
LOCATION: 35 Main Street, Chico, CA. This position will be eligible for partial telecommuting.
RESIDENCY: Candidate must be a California resident. Chico State Enterprises is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e., H-1B Visas).
POSITION OVERVIEW: The wildland management graduate success specialist ensures that students enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Studies:
Wildland Management Program meet all requirements necessary to complete their culminating activity (Thesis, Project, Professional Paper, or Capstone Course).
Under the supervision of the ecological reserves executive director, responsibilities include:
- Meet with prospective students to explain the program and facilitate the application process.
- Work with students in the program to define the purpose statement for their culminating activity.
- Collaborate with students to identify and secure members for each student’s graduate advisory committee.
- Serve as committee chair for students when an alternative chair cannot be identified or serve as a second committee member.
- Meet and communicate regularly with students in the program to ensure progress toward completion of their culminating activity.
- Contribute to academic program development efforts as needed.
- Requires either a PhD in natural resources, biology, education, environmental science, environmental education, or a related field; or an MS/MA degree with significant relevant experience.
- Experience working with graduate students culminating activities at the college or university level.
- Current faculty member or retired tenured faculty member.
- Proficiency with databases, word-processing software, internet applications, and professional e‑mail communication.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to remain diplomatic and perform effectively under pressure, while demonstrating strong troubleshooting and sound decision-making skills.
- Ability to collaborate and work as part of a team with colleagues, partners, teachers, students, subcontractors, staff, and student interns.
- Ability to manage time effectively and complete tasks independently.
- The work environment requires the employee to work both indoors (90%) and outdoors (10%) in heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid conditions.
- The position involves a combination of sedentary work and physical activity.
