Position: Liberal Studies Advisor (Student Services Professional III)

Job/Department Summary

Working independently, under general direction of the program coordinator, the incumbent provides complex and/or sensitive professional student service work, including but not limited to individual and group academic advising, guidance, and program management to support recruitment, admission, enrollment, and graduation of students. The incumbent advises on major requirements and degree options to support the University’s focus on student success, retention, and graduation.

Broader advising and counseling on career, learning, campus, and other issues is also provided.

The incumbent performs complex professional student service work, utilizing both knowledge and judgment to advise prospective, new and continuing students on pathway options, procedures, and requirements for both program admission and graduation. The incumbent uses judgment and administrative planning to provide and implement creative solutions to existing and future problems to ensure the functional operation of programs within the department and in other departments and the community.

The incumbent manages general operations and processes of all major options in coordination with campus faculty and staff; reviews and evaluates records and transcripts; provides support with student registration and enrollment; monitors and maintains up-to-date major information, including database management; collaborates with other University and school district personnel to facilitate student progress; and serves as liaison between students and University personnel regarding major requirements.

Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for communication with a widely diverse population of potential, current, and returning undergraduate and graduate majors for the Liberal Studies program. The incumbent fosters intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning by assisting and advising students in planning their educational career, learning the skills needed for academic success, and utilizing the resources and services available on campus to ensure their achievement of a degree.

This work includes analysis of needs, considerable advisement of policy and eligibility requirements, and the use of planning, interviewing, and counseling techniques. When appropriate, the incumbent develops approaches for possible implementation that meet specific program needs. The incumbent compiles advising-related reports and analyzes data to determine program needs.

The position requires considerable administrative planning to develop creative solutions that integrate approaches across organizational lines. The incumbent is also responsible for recognizing specific program needs and for collaborating with academic departments to improve and develop approaches for implementation for student engagement and success.

Required

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four‑year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job‑related field.

AND

Three years of full‑time professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should provide evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.

A master’s degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Additional specialized experience that demonstrates the applicant has successfully applied the knowledge and abilities of a Student Services professional may also be substituted for required education on a one‑to‑one basis.

Preferences
  • Prior experience and knowledge advising students about credential programs and PK‑12 settings
  • Experience using Chico State systems, databases and software
  • Experience with analysis of data

Mon‑Fri 8:00 am‑5:00 pm, Summer:
Mon‑Thurs 7:00 am‑5:30 pm
