Under the direction and general supervision of the Center Director or Center Education Supervisor, the IT Associate Teacher Floater will primarily support infant and toddler classrooms, and may assist preschool classrooms as needed. Responsibilities include providing quality early childhood education experiences through a center-based program for a diverse population of infants and toddlers, supporting teachers and volunteers, implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum, maintaining support services for special needs children, and following all Head Start Performance Standards, Agency and Program policies, and applicable federal and state regulations.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Act in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to the safe and healthy operation of a child care center.
- Ensure that classroom/play yard environments meet health and safety standards established by the program and comply with state and federal regulations.
- Implement quality teacher/child interactions to foster child development.
- Facilitate and participate in implementation of curriculum and development of activities.
- Individualize activities based on each child’s strengths and areas of growth.
- Assist teachers or other staff in carrying out activities that may include record-keeping, phone calls, and other communication with parents.
- Encourage parent participation and engagement in the classroom.
- Support written observations and maintain portfolios.
- Assist with identification of possible special needs and/or mental health support through the screening process.
- Support developmentally appropriate activities and design classroom interest areas that promote language and literacy, physical, social/emotional, and cognitive growth for children, enhancing overall approaches to learning.
- Model successful early childhood teaching strategies and techniques and encourage positive interactions among staff, children, parents, and community members.
- Support staff and parents in documentation and collection of educational and classroom in-kind data submitted to the supervisor.
- Attend and participate in agency trainings, workshops, in-service and staff meetings.
- Participate in setting and achieving professional career development goals.
- Participate in a mentor/coaching process, including videotaping of classroom instruction with employee consent.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding client and personnel issues, information, and records.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position classification.
- Compile observations and work samples and update children’s portfolios.
- Ensure sanitation of classroom materials and equipment.
- File education-related materials.
- Maintain and update parent bulletin boards.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position classification.
- Minimum of one-year classroom experience (minimum 3 hours/day for 50 days within a 6-month period qualifies as one-year experience).
- Positions assigned to work with infants and/or toddlers are required to complete a minimum of three additional units of Early Childhood Education coursework with a “C” grade or better relating to infant and toddler development.
- Read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak effectively before groups of parents or employees.
- Problem-solve and be proactive.
- Know sound medical, dental, and nutritional practices for young children.
- Perform basic arithmetic operations and understand ratios and percentages.
