Senior Civil Engineer

This recruitment is to fill three vacancies within the Public Works - Engineering Division.

Sewer and Storm Drain

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in various civil engineering disciplines, with an emphasis on wastewater collection and treatment systems, storm drainage infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and utility operations. This is a management-level position requiring experience supervising engineering and technical staff, managing consultants, coordinating with operations personnel, and overseeing capital improvement and maintenance projects related to sewer and stormwater systems.

Design and Capital Delivery

The ideal candidate should have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering, with a focus on the planning, design, and construction support of public works infrastructure projects. This is a management-level position requiring experience supervising engineering and technical staff, managing consultants, and leading the design and delivery of capital improvement projects, including streets, transportation systems, utilities, and drainage facilities.

DEFINITION

Under general direction, plans, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of staff and consultants performing engineering planning, design, and construction work for Public Works projects and facilities; performs and/or reviews technical calculations; develops construction documents including plans, specifications, and estimates for capital improvement projects; ensures functions meet all applicable laws, regulations, and City policies; coordinates project activities with other City departments and outside agencies;

provides complex staff assistance to departmental management staff in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general direction from assigned management personnel. Exercises direct supervision over professional and technical staff.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full supervisory-level class in the professional Engineer series that exercises independent judgment on diverse and specialized engineering activities with accountability and ongoing decision-making responsibilities associated with the work. Incumbents are responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of assigned staff and consultants and for organizing and overseeing day-to-day engineering activities, capital improvement project planning and development, and administration of federal, state, and local funds for capital improvements and various other projects and studies.

Incumbents are responsible for providing professional level support to the Director of Public Works in a variety of areas. Performance of the work requires the use of independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines.
