Overview

We are looking to fill one Information Systems Technician position with an emphasis on low-voltage infrastructure. This is an on-site position and all interviews will be conducted in person.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of technical duties in support of the City’s information systems under immediate (Technician I) or general (Technician II) supervision; provide technical desktop support to users; troubleshoot hardware and software problems; install hardware and software applications; perform network backups; assess training needs and train users; make recommendations regarding hardware and software acquisitions; perform database administration; and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Move and set up workstations; install computer terminals, data connections, telephones, desktop equipment, software, and network operating systems; install, maintain, and troubleshoot voice connections, cabling, instruments, and switches; test and certify connections (including cellular devices in public safety vehicles); work with vendors to support systems.
  • Provide maintenance and upgrades to electronic equipment; diagnose computer hardware and software problems; perform diagnostic testing and repairs; establish maintenance schedules.
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade operating systems and software packages across disparate platforms; assist users with operational questions; provide user training and ongoing support; research and implement changes to departmental databases and programs.
  • Coordinate with vendor representatives to resolve problems with system applications; work with software providers on maintenance and modifications; maintain inventory and purchase computer equipment and supplies per policies.
  • Enforce IT operational policies and procedures; stay informed of trends in computer software and networking; observe safety rules and protocols; perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications
  • Education:

    Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by college coursework in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Experience:

    Technician I – none required;
    Technician II – two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing technical support and network administration on PCs and peripheral equipment, including software administration.
  • Licenses:
    Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Abilities and Other Requirements
  • Knowledge:
    Basic principles of IT operations, troubleshooting, maintenance, and administration of PC operating systems, hardware, mobile computing, software systems; software packages and peripherals; network technologies and databases; LAN/WAN design and support; safety rules; customer service;
    English language and modern business tools.
  • Ability:
    Analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot IT networks, servers, and systems; operate and troubleshoot technical equipment; analyze data, propose plans, train users; establish maintenance schedules; learn and adapt to new software/hardware; communicate clearly; establish effective working relationships; manage time and priorities independently.
Education and Experience (cont.)
  • Coordinates with vendors and maintains documentation; performs research and testing of computer products; writes user and technical documentation; stays current with technology.
Physical Demands and Environment

Must have mobility to work in an office setting and visit City sites; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds; vision and hearing adequate for sensitive tasks; work in an office environment with moderate noise and controlled temperature; may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives.
