The Certified Nurse Assistant provides nursing and nursing related services to residents consistent with each resident’s comprehensive resident assessment and plan of care. All resident care is provided in a manner that meets the resident’s physical, mental and psychosocial needs and enables the individual to attain or maintain the highest practicable level of functioning. The Certified Nurse Assistant maintains a “homelike” environment for the residents, protects and promotes resident rights and assists the person to maintain independence and control to the greatest extent possible.

This position is responsible to the Director of Staff Development and/or Director of Nursing.

• Provide direct care to residents to improve or maintain the resident’s abilities according to the resident’s plan of care.
• Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, grooming, oral care, dressing, mobility, transferring, feeding, and other tasks as needed.
• Assist with bathing: transport resident to tub or shower, adjust water temperature, wash and rinse, dry, maintain privacy.
• Assist with dressing: locate and select clothing, help with snaps/zippers/buttons, communicate clothing needs.
• Restorative care: promote independent functioning via ambulation, range of motion exercises, assistive devices, proper body alignment.
• Assist with toileting: prompt residents to bathroom or provide bedpan/urinal, clean residents, record output, provide catheter care.
• Mobility support: assist residents, provide range of motion, weight‑bearing assistance, wheel‑chair use, maintain safe environment.
• Assist with transfers: position residents, use correct technique and equipment, obtain assistance when needed.
• Assist with eating: set‑up, serve, encourage chewing, clean after meals, record intake.
• Respect resident rights and dignity, offer choices, use proper names, handle property with respect.
• Observe and report changes in social interaction, mood, or refusal of treatment to Charge Nurse.
• Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of plans of care, report conditions and responses.
• Assist with preparation for state inspections, attend survey training, interact with state surveyors.
• Follow facility policies and procedures, including infection control; use PPE appropriately.
• Record accurate and legible information about resident care in resident’s records.
• Communicate with Charge Nurse throughout the shift.
• Demonstrate competent use of body mechanics and assistive equipment for lifting residents.
• Monitor physical environment for safety or fire hazards; report to Charge Nurse and housekeeping.
• Report injuries to resident or self immediately.
• Attend 12 hours of annual in‑service education; apply information to job tasks.
• Participate in fire and disaster drills; carry out assigned duties during emergencies.
