Job Description

Title: Teacher – Special Education

Type: Contract Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement

Salary: Per Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement

Reports To: Building Principal

Objective: The primary function of a special education teacher is to deliver the district curriculum in multiple ways that promote student learning and achievement while accounting for the special and diverse needs of special education students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Organize and structure the assigned classroom.
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers, instructors, coordinators, and administration to support the overall needs of the students.
  • Plan and supervise the classroom schedule.
  • Develop and implement curriculum plans.
  • Coordinate the roles of paraprofessionals, cooperating teachers, and other ancillary personnel.
  • Facilitate the development of new skills with assigned paraprofessionals.
  • Maintain open and ongoing communication with each child’s case worker and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Identify needed materials and equipment pursuant to educational plans.
  • Directly supervise paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Ensure the education of each student is consistent with the goals and objectives of the IEP.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of each student’s functioning level.
  • Draft IEP and progress notes.
  • Complete and distribute progress notes detailing each student’s progress toward meeting their IEP goals.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, clinics, and in‑services.
  • Implement all required activities, testing, and reporting of MCAS as directed by state guidelines, regulations, and district protocols.
  • Develop communication systems for each child with guidance of a consultant when needed.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with each student’s parent/legal guardian regarding educational needs and progress.
  • Attend regular meetings with consultants who serve the program.
  • Regularly communicate with ancillary personnel involved with each child.
  • Communicate with nursing staff to ensure sound practices and stay updated on the student’s medical status.
  • Physically manage students’ educational and personal care needs, including lifting, positioning, and changing.
  • Cooperate and remain flexible to work with other departments for smooth transitions of students between departments.
  • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.
  • Maintain liaison with students, families, support personnel, and agencies to ensure students’ needs are continually met.
  • Provide limited personal care to students when required.
  • Stand on one’s feet for extended periods of time as needed.
  • Counsel students when adjustment and academic problems arise and refer them to other services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal, administration, or the superintendent of schools.
Instruction
  • Prepare class objectives and outlines that align with the district‑approved curriculum.
  • Administer, correct, and analyze student assessments.
  • Use assessment findings to develop lessons.
  • Instruct students on rules of conduct and expected behaviors.
  • Manage the class and other students wherever located, whether on campus or off‑campus.
  • Inform parents or guardians of their student’s academic performance and behavior.
  • Maintain records of attendance and grades as required by school.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver differentiated instruction in line with district curriculum.
  • Provide timely feedback to students, parents, and guardians on evaluations.
  • Use techniques and strategies that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking skills.
  • Maintain a learning environment that is both physically and emotionally safe.
  • Communicate effectively with fellow staff members and school administration.
Administration
