School Nurse - Substitute (Per Diem)
Reports to the Building Principal and Supervisor of Nurses. Position type:
Full‑time. Salary is set by the School Nurse Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Schedule:
To be determined.
- Schedule and be present at all school health services, including physical examinations, immunization clinics, vision and hearing checks, scoliosis checks, pediculosis checks, and hepatitis checks.
- Maintain up‑to‑date health records for all students.
- Notify faculty and staff of students with special health problems, such as life‑threatening allergies, diabetes, heart conditions, and petit mal.
- Interpret a student's health status to parents and school personnel while preserving confidentiality.
- Observe students regularly to determine health needs.
- Authorize the exclusion and/or readmission of students with contagious or infectious diseases.
- Administer first aid according to established procedures.
- Administer and secure medications as necessary.
- Assist the principal in establishing sanitary conditions within the school.
- Serve as a health consultant and resource person for classroom teachers conducting health‑related classes.
- Contact and visit homes of children referred by the principal for counseling when required.
- Maintain adequate first‑aid supplies in each school.
- Attend IDEA evaluation and reevaluation meetings.
- Advise on modification of the educational program to meet students' health needs through the IDEA and 504 process.
- Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
- Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and the health curriculum, including Safety Committee meetings.
- Participate in in‑service training programs.
- Prepare and submit reports as requested by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, and the Superintendent of Schools.
- Make formal referrals to specialists when appropriate and conduct follow‑up.
- Work with community health agencies when necessary.
- Assist in the formation of health policies, goals, and objectives of the school department.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor of Nurses, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, and the Superintendent of Schools.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
