TITLE:
DISTRICT ATTENDANCE SPECIALIST
TYPE: Non-Union Cycle II
SALARY: Per Terms of Non-Union Employees
STATUS: Non-Exempt
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday
- Friday, seven (7) hours per day; 180 days (school year), may work up to twenty (20) additional days with supervisor approval
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Attendance & Enrollment and Family & Community Engagement Facilitator
OBJECTIVE:
The District Attendance Specialist supports improved student attendance through family engagement, targeted interventions, and collaboration with schools and community partners.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Work with students referred through Intervention Reports, using focused family engagement strategies to improve attendance.
- Conduct home visits to address attendance concerns, re‑engage students and identify barriers
- Assist with summer enrollment, residency verifications and family engagement events as needed.
- Data Management:
Track, analyze, and report on student attendance data. - Meet regularly with the Supervisor of Attendance & Enrollment to review cases, progress, and intervention strategies.
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, Family and Community Engagement Facilitator and other support staff to align attendance interventions.
- Actively participate in school‑based Attendance Team meetings & Monitor chronic absenteeism
- Family Engagement:
Collaborate with families & community social service providers to provide necessary resources. - Oversee end‑of‑year Perfect Attendance awards and prizes.
- Coordinate and manage School Attendance Table and other school incentives around attendance.
- Actively seek and manage grants and funding opportunities to support attendance rewards and incentives.
- Serve as the district subject‑matter expert for the attendance letters within the student information system, supporting schools to ensure all correspondence is accurate, timely, and aligned with current student attendance data.
- Monitor and support proper documentation of all attendance letters in the Communication Log, including assisting schools with clearing outdated letters to prevent backlogs, errors, and duplicate communications.
Education, Training, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or 2 years of college level coursework with 3 years of highly relevant experience or equivalent training in a school, early education, or community agency setting.
- Experience working with families and in urban school environments is preferred. Candidates must have a strong commitment to supporting diverse families and student success.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Strong interpersonal skills, must be able to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic, cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to relate to and work with a variety of constituencies including but not limited to: administrators, teachers, other school staff members, families, students, visitors, and community and social agencies.
- Must maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrate flexibility, and utilize data systems for tracking and reporting.
- Self‑motivated, flexible, and well organized.
- Detail oriented with analytical and problem solving skills, along with customer service abilities and other related characteristics.
- Ability to work well as part of a team.
- Ability to effectively manage a dynamic schedule.
- Ability to work under pressure and must be highly adaptable and flexible.
- Familiarity with computers and computer software programs, particularly Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
