Job Description

TITLE: Safety Officer/Security Monitor

TYPE: Non-Union Cycle II

SALARY: Per the Terms of Employment for Non-Union Personnel, Cycle II

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, seven (7) hours/day, School Year (180 days), may work up to ten (10) additional days at the Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services' discretion

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services/Building Principal

OBJECTIVE: Promoting attitudes of student responsibility; assists with the safety of students and staff and the security of the facilities; assists in providing protection for all students, staff, and property.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Greets, registers, and screens visitors at the school entrance. Assigns visitor pass and directs them to the proper destination.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, and report violations of the school policy and law.
  • Detects, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities to building administration.
  • Assists with monitoring and directing student movement throughout assigned school and properties.
  • Notifies the administrative staff or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Operates metal detectors and conducts searches when directed to do so.
  • Assists with fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency preparedness drills as necessary.
  • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by the Student Support Services Office.
  • Aids in monitoring and ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow at arrival and dismissal.
  • Remain highly visible at all times and serve as a resource for all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Works closely with the school resource officers (SRO) and the building custodians on safety and security matters.
  • Aids in monitoring the security cameras and ensuring that the exterior doors of the buildings are secure.
  • Depending on assignment will assist in security related activities after school hours for events such as open house and sporting events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services and the building Principal.
  • REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education, Training, and Experience

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/College Degree, preferred.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license
  • One year or more of progressively responsible experience in a security-related field.
  • AED/CPR Certified preferred.
  • Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Demonstrates excellent integrity and good moral character and initiative.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to triage/prioritize competing needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the proven ability to effectively communicate with students and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Proven ability to relate to and work with a variety of constituencies including but not limited to: administrators, teachers, other school staff members, parents/guardians/caregivers, students, visitors, and the community.

    • Physical Requirements:

      Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, adding machines, etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to stand, crouch and bend over for a long period of time at intervals throughout the day.
