Job Title
Water System Maintenance Worker – Department of Public Works, Water Division (DPW – Water)
Status: UFCW Laborers Union, Non-Exempt;
Full‑Time (40 Hours)
Salary:
Grade 5L, Step 05 – $18.31/Hour (plus $1.00/Hour for licenses).
Schedule:
Mon‑Fri, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM.
Certifications/Licenses
Required:
Massachusetts Class B CDL;
Massachusetts Class A CDL Preferred.
Under supervision/direction, the Water System Maintenance Worker works with personnel, equipment, and resources to perform a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled manual work in the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of a water system, including water mains, service connections, hydrants, meters, and valves. The role requires availability for emergency work on nights, weekends, and holidays, and may involve Emergency Night Stand‑by Duty.
Responsibilities- Install and repair water mains and appurtenances
- Install and repair water service connections
- Operate, clean, and maintain tapping and drilling machines
- Operate, clean, and maintain pumping equipment used in the installation and maintenance of water mains and service connections
- Repair trenches and excavations by patching with bituminous and concrete materials
- Wash and clean all motor vehicles, as directed by foreman or other supervising authority
- Maintain material stock on utility truck as directed by the supervising authority
- Other duties as assigned per the full job description
- Massachusetts Class B CDL License – Required
- Massachusetts Class A CDL License – Preferred
- Minimum 1 year of related experience and/or training or a combination of education and experience/training
- Working knowledge of water treatment and systems operations
- Working knowledge of a wide variety of hand tools, air tools, and hydraulic tools
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
