Highway Maintenance Craftsperson

Department: DPW - Highway

Employment Status: Non-Exempt, UFCW 1459 Laborers, Full-Time (40 Hours/Week)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Certifications/Licenses

Required:

Massachusetts Class B CDL License, Massachusetts Class A CDL License (Must be obtained within one (1) year of hire).

The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Work’s Highway Division is hiring a Highway Maintenance Craftsperson who will be responsible for maintaining roadways, sidewalks, lawns, trees, drains, sewer lines and public infrastructure such as buildings.

• Perform construction maintenance work on streets, sidewalks, tree belts and other public property.
• Perform excavation, bracing, sheet piling and grading.
• Fill potholes and cave‑ins.
• Maintain, clean and construct sewers, catch basins, drains and manholes.
• Actively participate in snow and ice removal operations.
• Perform "Flag" duties at job sites on occasion.
• Erect manholes and catch basins.
• Lays sewer pipe and house waste connections.
• Construct sidewalk forms and finish concrete.
• May assist in forestry operations as needed.
• Operate air compressor and jackhammer.
• Supervise others and work in the building and maintenance trades.
• Perform general labor duties as required.
• Drive highway maintenance vehicles and complete daily vehicle maintenance logs.
• Abide by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures.

• Massachusetts Class B CDL License – Required.
• Massachusetts Class A CDL License (Must be obtained within one (1) year of hire) – Required.
• High school diploma or GED; or one to three (1–3) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience – Required.
• Knowledge of and experience in construction, street and building maintenance, carpentry, and/or other skilled crafts.
• Working knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Willingness to perform heavy manual labor.
