Position: Water Meter Maintenance Worker – Assigned to Hydrant Maintenance
Department: DPW – Water
Employment Status: UFCW Laborers Union, Non‑Exempt;
Full‑Time (40 Hours)
Schedule: Mon‑Fri – 7:00AM – 3:30PM

MA Class B CDL License, MA Water Distribution Grade 2 License
The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Works – Water Division is hiring a Water System Maintenance Worker – Assigned to Hydrant Maintenance with the primary responsibility of maintaining the city‑owned fire hydrants including but not limited to repairs and rebuilds, flushing, replacement of worn meters, and overall assistance with water system maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE- Maintain city‑owned fire hydrants and hydrants records.
- Lubricate hydrants, inspect hydrant rods, thrust plates and nozzles on a regular basis.
- Flush city‑owned fire hydrants.
- Assist with installation of water services.
- Assist with thawing of frozen water services.
- Read water meters as needed.
- Support snow removal operations during normal working hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Work Emergency Stand‑By Duty as required.
- Perform all related duties as directed by the Superintendent or other supervising authority.
- Abide by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned per the full job description.
- Massachusetts Class B CDL License – Required
- Massachusetts Water Distribution Grade 2 License – Required
- Massachusetts Class A CDL License – Preferred
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two (2) years of hydrant maintenance experience plus two (2) years as a Water Systems Maintenance worker
- Knowledge of and experience in performing a variety of semi‑skilled maintenance and manual tasks
- Working knowledge of a wide variety of hand tools, air tools and hydraulic tools
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Willingness to perform heavy manual labor
