Job Summary
- Operate all types of equipment to perform all safety functions, including operating manual transmission, chaining tires, etc. Must be skilled and qualified to drive in all types of terrain, routes, and environmental conditions.
- Safely operate a tractor/trailer in the transportation of freight in accordance with Company, Federal, State and Local laws and FMCSA regulations.
- Adhere to all FMCSA requirements as a Commercial Driver’s License holder.
- Maintain records required in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with all requirements for safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
- Ensure security of equipment and cargo.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections to ensure safe working conditions of the tractor and trailer before each trip and at the end.
- Check gauges and visual indicators for malfunctions, ensure seal or lock on trailers and conduct inspection of vehicle before and during trips to identify problems.
- Promptly report all maintenance problems to Fleet Services and/or supervision.
- Verify unit numbers against paperwork and report any discrepancies to supervisor.
- Use in‑cab technology, including electronic logs, as required.
- Drive according to diverse schedules and work the dock based on business needs.
- Run over‑the‑road when approved by Safety and required by business needs.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
- Assist with local pick‑up and delivery routes, hub/regional runs, dock work, loading/unloading freight, and customer‑site loading/unloading.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform any additional duties as required for operational, safety, or other needs.
- High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent education and experience.
- 21 years of age required per FMCSA regulations; 1 year driving experience required.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
- Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Residence within 75 miles of the domiciled Service Center and/or work assignment.
- Hazmat, Tanker and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirements may apply).
- Ability to operate a forklift (minimum 7,500 lb. vehicle).
- Ability to push or pull a loaded pallet jack and/or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lbs.
- Physical activities: standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
- Capability to drop/hook and couple trailers, including cranking landing gear and pulling a 5th wheel pin requiring ~65 lbs of pressure, and maneuver a trailer dolly.
- Provide an acceptable MVR.
- Familiar with state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules.
- Pass FMCSA required medical exam and road test.
- Meet FMCSA requirements to speak and read English.
- Lift ~70 lbs. or more if required by essential functions.
- Drive all routes and terrain types, including mountains, steep roads, curvy highways, deserts, bridges, tunnels, etc.
- Drive in various weather conditions: rain, wind, snow, freezing temperatures, hot weather, etc.
- Operate all safety and operational functions of equipment, including chaining tires, driving manual or automatic transmission vehicles, etc.
- Comply with all company policies, rules, procedures and Code of Conduct.
- Interact well with others; work independently or in a team setting.
- Work under tight time constraints in a high‑volume environment with multiple priorities.
- Understand and comply with written safety rules, operation manuals, maintenance instructions.
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen, random drug and/or alcohol tests, and undergo criminal history background check.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
