POSITION SUMMARY

The EHS Specialist is directly responsible for promoting a strong safety culture throughout the company and subcontractors maintaining Cooper Steel’s core priorities:
Safety, Quality, Production. This EHS Specialist position is a weekend shift position. Weekend Shift works Friday‑Sunday 5:30AM‑5:30PM, totaling 36 hours a week. There will be a $2 extra shift premium for this weekend shift position.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout the company and subcontractors maintaining Cooper Steel’s core priorities:
    Safety, Quality, Production
  • OSHA, Health, Safety, Environmental Recordkeeping and Reporting
  • Health and safety requirements with Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations
  • Perform facility safety audits and walk throughs to identify existing and/or potential hazards or non‑compliance issues and provide guidance on corrective actions
  • Lead new hire safety orientation
  • Assist Facilities Safety Director in the development and implementation of safety controls
  • Lead incident investigation, reporting, review, and follow‑up
  • Lead weekly Toolbox Talks
  • Lead the Facility Safety Committee
  • Ensure health and safety awareness for employees and visitors, and compliance with OSHA and state regulations and policies
  • Lead training of employees regarding health and safety responsibilities, procedures, rules and regulations on a continuing basis and recordkeeping
  • Lead Powered Industrial Trucks and Overhead Crane qualification training and recordkeeping.
  • Perform procedures relating to safety and environmental issues for EPA and local agencies
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned by management
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Will directly manage the safety responsibilities of the representatives involved in the implementation of the safety program.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the safety and environmental safety field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in fabrication, steel, or heavy manufacturing/industrial background.
  • Minimum OSHA 30 Hour General Industry Certification (OSHA 511 preferred)
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of OSHA regulations and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with applicable Federal, State and Local rules and regulations as required by OSHA, DOT, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Experience with overhead cranes, forklifts, and heavy machinery.

Strong interpersonal skills; excellent time management skills; ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; problem‑solving skills; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; computer literate with working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; highly developed organizational, planning and oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with others. Ability to lead and manage a department. Ability to travel for extended periods of time.

WORK

ENVIRONMENT

Position is typically in a fabrication facility setting that involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. These include the following conditions: inside/outside facilities, varying terrain, weather conditions, use of personal protective equipment, machine/equipment use, etc.
