School Resource Officer/DARE Officer Job Description
School Resource Officer Objective:
Provides security patrol and other security services to the District. Helps to maintain a safe orderly school environment.
DARE Officer Core Objectives:
- Classroom Instruction:
Deliver certified D.A.R.E. curricula (typically to elementary and middle school students) focusing on the consequences of drug use, decision-making skills, and peer pressure resistance. - Student Mentorship:
Interact with students outside the classroom during lunch, recess, and school assemblies to build positive, trust-based relationships. - Community Engagement:
Serve as a liaison between the police department, school administration, teachers, and parents.
Have extensive work with law enforcement agencies. In accordance with R.C. 107.98, have a certificate demonstrating satisfactory completion of an approved basic peace officer training program or a minimum of 20 years of active duty as a peace officer as that term is defined in R.C. 109.71.
Scope of Position:
Be able to work with police and safety personnel as well as school district staff. Hold and maintain a valid driver's license with no serious violations. Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents and the community.
Essential Functions:
Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form 1-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
The School Resource Officer coordinates and maintains building safety and law enforcement throughout the school district.
The School Resource Officer works in collaboration with the Superintendent, administrators including building principals to establish appropriate regulations, procedures, and plans to ensure safe and secure school facilities.
The School Resource Officer works in conjunction with the Director of Operations, the administrative staff and as necessary, the Board of Education to conduct internal investigations and refer incidents to Federal and State Law enforcement agencies. The School Resource Officer responds to direct threats against the school buildings, staff, students and community members on District premises and at District events to which the School Resource Officer is assigned to attend.
1. Manages the development, delivery and advancement of practices and procedures to support a safe school environment. Prioritizes assigned tasks and completes duties within required time frames.
2. Responds promptly to requests for assistance.
3. Collaborates with staff to identify students struggling with academic and/or social-emotional Issues.
4. Helps investigate student concerns on request (e.g., abuse/neglect, attendance, discrimination, domestic violence, emotional/behavioral issues, pregnancy, parenting, poverty, self-esteem, substance abuse, etc.).
5. Exemplifies professionalism at all times.
6. Fosters goodwill to enhance the District's public image.
7. Complies with drug-free workplace rules, board policies and administrative guidelines/procedures.
8. Contributes to an effective working environment.
9. Performs all aspects of the job in accordance with board policies as well as state and federal law.
10. Functions as part of a cohesive team and develops mutually respectful relationships with co-workers.
11. Keeps an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.
12. Maintains a professional appearance and wears work attire appropriate for the position.
13. Respects privacy and maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
