Registered Nurse (RN)

The primary responsibility of this position is to supervise the day‑to‑day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty, ensuring adherence to current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. This includes maintaining the highest degree of quality care at all times and coordinating with the Director of Nursing (DON) and/or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) as applicable.

General

Purpose

This role oversees all nursing operations, including leadership, supervision, and the implementation of policies and procedures that govern nursing care.

Essential Duties
  • Administrative Functions
    • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day‑to‑day functions of nursing activities.
    • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern nursing services.
    • Ensure that reference material (e.g., PDR’s, regulations, professional standards) is current and available at nursing stations.
    • Keep the Nursing Service Procedures Manual up to date and ensure all personnel comply with its procedures.
    • Make written and oral reports or recommendations to the Director regarding operation of the nursing service department.
    • Review departmental policies, procedures, and job descriptions periodically and recommend revisions to the Director.
    • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of overall care.
    • Ensure personnel compliance with job descriptions and participate in facility surveys and inspections.
    • Review resident written discharge plans and assist in planning the nursing portion of discharge as needed.
    • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents per policy.
    • Complete accident/incident reports when required.
    • Physically interpret policies and procedures for personnel, residents, visitors, and agencies.
    • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
    • Maintain confidentiality of user IDs and passwords and report any suspected violations to the Administrator.
    • Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system.
  • Committee Functions
    • Attend required committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
    • Assist in preparing written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities for committees.
    • Provide information to committees as requested and participate in developing agendas.
    • Implement committee recommendations under the direction of the Director.
  • Personnel Functions
    • Ensure sufficient licensed nurses and LPNs are available for the shift.
    • Ensure sufficient Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are available per resident needs.
    • Develop and assign work tasks, delegating authority to Charge Nurses.
    • Ensure nursing assistants are qualified and nurse aide trainees are supervised by a licensed nurse.
    • Conduct daily rounds to verify staff perform tasks in accordance with nursing standards.
    • Monitor absenteeism and report staffing gaps to the Director.
    • Enforce department policies, including dress codes, and address complaints.
    • Maintain a cooperative relationship with interdepartmental staff.
    • Create a calm, supportive environment and hold regular shift meetings to address issues.
    • Participate in employee performance evaluations and staffing decisions.
    • Administer discipline fairly while adhering to equal‑employment policies.
    • Report occupational exposures, incidents of fraud, and computer workstation security breaches.
  • Nursing Care Functions
    • Notify nursing staff of new admissions, room assignments, and prepare rooms for admissions.
    • Greet new residents, escort them to rooms, and conduct physician rounds as needed.
    • Encourage timely physician documentation of progress notes and orders.
    • Consult with residents, families, and physicians for care planning.
    • Notify relevant parties of changes in resident condition.
    • Perform direct nursing care: start IVs, obtain specimens, take vital signs, admit/transfers, and discharge residents.
    • Monitor medication administration, review medication cards, and oversee medication passes.
    • Supervise the use of restraints according to policy.
