Overview

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval includes an award amount (up to $200,000) and an eligibility period (one to five years), determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following bodies at the time the program was completed: ACEN or CCNE
  • Or individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Nursing may become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
  • Upon achievement of a State license - appointment on temporary basis and later conversion to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program
  • Reference VA Handbook 5005 - Appendix G6
  • Or graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing with current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing
  • Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized agency (e.g., ICD)
  • Current full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state/territory/ Commonwealth or District of Columbia
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: may be appointed at the entry step on a 120-day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case basis).

  • Education Nurse I
    - Level I with ADN/ diploma;
    Nurse I
    - Level II with ADN/diploma and 1 year of specialized nursing experience or BSN with no additional experience;
    Nurse I
    - Level III with progressively responsible experience;
    Nurse II with leadership and advanced practice;
    Nurse III with leadership and complex care responsibilities; foreign education not creditable for related degrees; refer to VA Qualification Standards for details
  • Physical requirements:

    Inpatient care involves bending, grasping, kneeling, lifting up to 35 pounds, and other mobility tasks; must possess vision and hearing abilities adequate to perform duties
Duties
  • Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned residents and supervise licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate
  • Direct nursing education, orientation, competencies, quality improvement, and outcomes utilization consultation
  • Demonstrate leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies
  • Provide peers with informal constructive feedback
  • Foster a safe, supportive environment for professional development
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and share educational findings and ideas
  • Coordinate with the Minimum Data Set (MDS) coordinator to ensure documentation aligns with Resource Utilization Group (RUG) scoring
