Position
Bus Driver
Reports ToTransportation Supervisor
Superintendent of Schools/Designee
Responsible for operating a school bus to transport students to and from home and school, as well as related activities, according to Chillicothe City School District, state, and federal guidelines. Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.
Qualifications- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to the 12th grade plus three years as a licensed motor vehicle operator.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, procedures, and laws related to passenger vehicle operation.
- Pass annual state physical examination.
- Pass drug and alcohol testing as required by law.
- Good driving record: no moving traffic violations within the past year and not more than one within the past two years.
- Valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver’s License with School Bus Driver’s Endorsement.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Good driving and criminal background that meets all contractual, local, state, and federal requirements.
- Demonstrated communication, organizational, decision‑making, listening, and mental/visual capacity skills.
- Drive the assigned route and pick up/discharge students.
- Perform daily pre‑trip inspection.
- Manage fuel, coolant, and other fluid levels.
- Inspect safety equipment: flares, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit.
- Maintain student discipline via verbal directions and reminders.
- Communicate with students, parents, staff, and administrators.
- Demonstrate empathy for children.
- Report malfunctions to the mechanic or Transportation Supervisor.
- Operate warning lights for pickup and discharge, and hazard lights at railroad crossings.
- Operate a two‑way radio properly.
- Read and follow written instructions: maps, route sheets, pre‑trip instructions, field trips, etc.
- Complete required forms.
- Climb in and out of the bus emergency door to evacuate the bus in an emergency.
- Perform emergency first aid.
- Attend in‑service and training programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Thorough knowledge of Ohio Bus Transportation Laws.
- Considerable knowledge of basic bus mechanical equipment operation.
- Considerable knowledge of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws.
- General knowledge of defensive driving.
- Some knowledge of child behavior.
- Skill in operating a passenger school bus.
- Ability to care for challenged students with diverse and special transportation needs.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to communicate well with people.
- Ability to remain calm under stress.
- Ability to control temper and maintain poise.
