Materials Handler

Summary

This position serves as a Warehouse Worker located within the Warehouse area of the Logistics Service in the Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The role involves handling and/or overseeing one or more product lines, or may serve as the senior employee in a smaller warehouse or supply facility.

Experience is not required to be a specific length, but candidates must provide evidence of training or experience that demonstrates knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position. Applicants will be evaluated against the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Experience must include:

• Receiving, storing, selecting, and shipping of general or specialized bulk materials and equipment
• Assisting in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock
• Coordinating incoming and outgoing shipments and placement of materials
• Using initiative to consolidate materials for maximum space utilization and protection

Recruitment Screening: applicants will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element. Qualified candidates will then be rated on dexterity, safety, interpretation, technical practices, and work practices. Volunteering experience (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) will be credited as well.

Physical Requirements:

the role requires substantial walking, pushing, pulling of carts, lifting, handling of boxes over 40 pounds, and handling equipment heavier than 100 pounds. Drivers may need to operate trucks or forklifts and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Personal protective equipment may be required.

Driver’s License: a current valid state‑issued driver’s license is required. No photographs will be accepted.

Work involves significant physical effort, potential hazardous materials, and may require working in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles, warehouses, and outdoors. Workers may experience hot, cold, drafty, or poorly lit environments and are at risk of trips, falls, or injuries.

• Develop and implement storage plans for assigned areas and coordinate movement of supplies between warehouse locations
• Consolidate materials to maximize space utilization and protect materials
• Coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments and placement on docking areas
• Select storage locations within the overall warehousing plan
• Rotate stock, check for outdated materials, and maintain temperature controls and safeguards
• Handle delivery and warehousing of hazardous, flammable, and temperature‑sensitive products
• Drive vehicles, trucks, or vans not exceeding 4500 pounds with electric or hydraulic lifts
• Group supplies logically for easy access and maximum efficiency
• Submit monthly reports, status updates, monitor progress, and set benchmarks
• Coordinate all excess/turn‑ins of equipment and materials
• May serve as a senior member of a warehouse project team
• Perform other related duties as assigned
