As a Traffic Control Designer with Fryman Management, Inc., you will work with other department members to design, create, and refine temporary traffic control plans (TCPs) in support of construction, utility, and public works projects. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers, field personnel, and local agencies to ensure all traffic plans maintain safety, achieve regulatory compliance, and support project scope, schedule, quality, and financial objectives.
Requirements and Expectations
- Draft and prepare detailed Traffic Control Plans (TCPs), detour plans, and lane closure setups using CAD software.
- Ensure all designs strictly adhere to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), state Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and local agency requirements.
- Coordination of project design documentation and revision logs throughout the project lifecycle.
- Prepare and submit plan packages to municipal and state permitting authorities; coordinate plan reviews and address agency comments to secure necessary approvals.
- Conduct site reviews or evaluate field conditions, aerial photography, and site maps to assess traffic flow and potential safety hazards.
- Assist in estimating required equipment, signage, striping, and temporary traffic control devices for project submittals.
- Support with creating, updating, and maintaining project schedules related to design deliverables and permit approvals.
- Handle requests for technical plan information by self-initiative or by routing to the appropriate team member.
- Participate as assigned in project management processes, tracking, coordination, communications, and risk management activities.
Qualifications and Skill Sets
- 1–5 years of experience in traffic control design, civil drafting, or temporary traffic management planning.
- Associate’s degree in Drafting/CAD, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related technical field preferred; relevant experience will be considered.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Micro Station, or specialized traffic control design software.
- Working knowledge of construction, traffic control, or public works project operations.
- Strong familiarity with MUTCD, local municipal traffic standards, and permit application processes.
- ATSSA Traffic Control Design Specialist (TCDS) certification or ability to obtain is a plus.
- Driving for results in assigned design tasks and submittal deadlines.
- Basic problem-solving at the tactical level (analyzing field layouts, investigating conflicts, and following up on permit comments).
- Strong communication skills (expressing ideas clearly; active listening).
- Establishing effective relationships with a wide spectrum of team members, clients, and municipal stakeholders.
- Diligence and high attention to detail in technical drawing and documentation.
Strong organization and time management skills.
