Technical Writer
Up to $44.63/hour, 18-Month Contract
We are currently seeking a Technical Writer - Utility Operations to join a growing operational excellence team in Chino, California on an 18-month contract basis.
This hybrid role requires onsite attendance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will focus on developing and maintaining operational and safety-related documentation supporting utility and field operations teams.
The successful candidate will work closely with SMEs, advisors, project leads, and operational stakeholders to create practical, field-ready documentation while supporting governance, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Core Responsibilities Work Method Documentation Development- Design, draft, and maintain:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Job Aids
- Performance Support Notebooks
- Manual updates including Rubber Glove, Grounding, Rigging, and Transmission Manuals
- Practical, field-ready, and usable by craft personnel
- Aligned with current standards, policies, and safety requirements
- Structured in accordance with approved WMI governance and SOP procedures
- Schedule and facilitate working sessions with SMEs, reviewers, and advisors
- Gather technical input, operational insights, and field practices
- Capture consensus decisions and translate them into clear, usable documentation
- Research and consolidate policies, presentations, vendor materials, standards, and SME feedback
- Validate technical accuracy and completeness of deliverables prior to approval
- Partner with WMI Advisors, Project Leads, SMEs, and stakeholders across organizational units
- Provide regular status updates and support project timelines
- Follow established governance, review, and approval workflows
- Perform site visits and job walks as required
- Conduct basic image editing to support technical documentation
- Collaborate with media vendors to assist with scripts and development guidance
- Maintain and update documentation in response to:
- Standards changes
- Corrective actions
- Safety work streams
- New tools, equipment, or operational processes
- Proven experience producing technical or procedural documentation
- Strong ability to translate complex technical information into clear, field-usable language
- Experience facilitating SME workshops and working sessions
- Strong organizational skills with excellent writing and version-control discipline
- Comfortable collaborating across multiple organizational teams and stakeholders
- Proficiency with:
- Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point
- SharePoint, One Drive, Outlook, Teams
- Adobe Acrobat
- Basic photo editing software
- Microsoft Copilot or similar collaboration tools
- Experience with in utilities, energy, construction, manufacturing, or industrial environments strongly preferred
- Prior exposure to field operations, safety procedures, or industrial compliance documentation highly desirable
This role is not considered entry-level in practice due to the high safety and compliance impact of the work.
Typical candidates will possess:
- 5-8+ years of technical writing experience, or
- 3-5+ years of technical writing experience combined with strong utility, industrial, or field operations exposure
