Position: SUPPORT SERVICES ASSISTANT (INTERPRETER)
Job Description and Duties

The Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) (SSAI) will facilitate communications accurately, effectively and impartially using sign language for hearing impaired and severely speech impaired inmates. The SSAI will also perform other duties related to assisting in the communication process. The SSAI is under the direct supervision of the Institution's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator and Indirect supervision of the Warden. This position may require the SSAI to travel to other correctional institutions, other than their assigned facility, if needed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

Overtime hours may be necessary when required for emergency circumstances.

In compliance with the Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the SSAI will perform sign language interpreting services to uphold effective communications standards and ongoing compliance with Federal, State and Departmental ADA laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Limited term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Will also consider Temporary Appointments (TA) - Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the classification, but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination, may apply as a TA. TAs are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TA to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of the TA.

Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TA will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.

$4,867.00 - $6,096.00 C This classification is currently eligible for a Recruitment and Retention Differential Pay. Employees in the Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) classification who are employed by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in an adult or juvenile facility in the capacity of an American Sign Language interpreter will receive $2500 per pay (monthly) period.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
