JOB TITLE: Secondary Classroom Teacher

SALARY LEVEL: Negotiated Salary Schedule

DEPARTMENT: Instruction

REPORTS TO: Secondary Principal

  • Education and/or

    Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four‑year college or university; secondary teaching certificate meeting state requirements to be considered a “Highly Qualified” teacher.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints; write speeches and articles with originality; deliver persuasive speeches and presentations on complex topics to various audiences.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.
  • Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form; handle problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
  • Physical Demands: Regularly talk or hear; frequently stand and walk; occasionally sit; use hands or fingers; reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; lift or move up to 50 pounds; meet specific vision requirements such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Work Environment: Sometimes work outdoors in various weather conditions; sometimes exposed to wet, humid, cold, or hot conditions; moderate to loud noise level.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach in the curriculum area of certification such as reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize instructional time.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret the school’s programs.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service educational activities provided by the district and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.
  • Supervise pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with district and state testing programs.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs as required.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsor pupil activities.
  • Develop and use instructional material suitable for verbal or visual instruction of pupils with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities.
  • Provide individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help pupils make a satisfactory transition to school.
  • Complete all paperwork, district and state education forms, in a timely manner.
  • Implement students’ individualized educational plans (IEP) by providing modifications and adaptations.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the administrator.
