Job Title

The City of Chowchilla is seeking qualified candidates to fill positions in our Public Works Water Division.

Job Description

One (1) position will be filled based on candidate qualifications; therefore, only one classification level will be filled. Based on qualifications, applicants are to identify what level they are applying for.

Water System Worker I ($23.49 - $30.07)

Water System Worker II ($26.58 - $34.02)

Water System Worker III ($30.02 - $38.43)

Water System Worker I

Under general supervision, to perform maintenance, operations and repair work on the City's water distribution system; including pumps, mains, chlorinators, meters and other equipment; and complete related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Water System Worker I is the entry-level class in the Water System Worker Series that allows the incumbent to develop journey level knowledge and abilities. Initially, under immediate supervision, incumbents perform more routine and less complex assignments within an established procedural framework where there are minimal consequences of error, including meter reading and customer service work. Incumbents are expected to perform the full scope of assigned duties.

This classification may progress to a Water System II with Department Head approval after gaining experience, possessing any specialized training and/or licensing and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher-level classification.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs meter reading, inspection, maintenance and customer service-oriented work related to the water distribution system; performs underground water system maintenance work.
  • Read meters, records readings; re-read meters as necessary; either manually or by radio-read equipment; investigates unusual readings and customer complaints regarding taste and odor, pressure and related problems; resolves problems or prepares work orders for follow up.
  • Inspects meters and lines for damage or leaks; install and exchanges water meters; repairs minor leaks; replaces meter lids; reports inoperative or damaged meters, bypassed meters and related problems; clears or reports meters obstructed by landscaping.
  • Install water service lines, meters and related appurtenances; perform varied facility maintenance work as required; perform a variety of heavy physical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and other underground lines.
  • Disconnects and reconnects water services; prepares incident reports:
  • May participate in organizational and community group meetings; address and respond to service questions, inquiries and complaints; provides information to customer or refers to others as appropriate; maintains good public relations; notifies customer as required.
  • Operates city vehicles; inspects and fuels vehicles and performs minor maintenance; orders parts and supplies.

  • Observes safe work methods and safety precautions.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
  • Required to respond to after-hours emergency conditions and/or participate in assigned standby duties.
  • Essential Responsibilities:

    General and Specialized Job Knowledge and Abilities

    • General knowledge of operating an office computer, basic tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of water systems. Principles and methods of equipment inspection and preventative maintenance. Safe work practice and procedures.
    • Specialized Knowledge of practices, methods, techniques and materials used in reading, maintaining, troubleshooting operating repairing water meters, water distribution and underground lines and related equipment, methos and techniques of troubleshooting and testing, installing and repairing meters and minor leaks; business arithmetic, basic street, underground and landscape maintenance practices; such as, mowing, edging, weed abatement, basic plumbing practices; occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
    • Ability to: perform maintenance and repair on a variety of water production and distribution facilities; read and accurately record water meter reading; read and interpret maps and plans; work independently without immediate supervision; complete accurate records and reports; perform arithmetic computation quickly and accurately wok weekends and holidays as required; work flexible hours, including responding to emergency situations off hour as needed;

      communicate clearly and concisely, deal tactfully and courteously with the public, often in difficult or strained circumstances; both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
