Job Description

Montgomery County School Board in Virginia is accepting applications for a Hearing Specialist to work in conjunction with the special education department to serve the student population division wide for the  school year.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Participate on a team that determines if students meet the disability criteria for hearing impairment.
  • Collaborate with specialists, school personnel, and families to determine and provide students with appropriate supports and services.
  • Develop and implement an instructional program that provides the best possible education for each student.
Licensure and Education
  • Hold a current Special Education Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement to serve as a teacher of the hearing impaired.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.
Experience Required
  • Knowledge of anatomy involved in hearing impairment.
  • Knowledge of medical research relevant to hearing impairment.
  • Knowledge of academic, language, and emotional implications of hearing impairment.
  • Knowledge of impact of communication mode on testing.
  • Understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity related to families and students who communicate with American Sign Language.
  • Proficient competency in providing direct instruction to students.
  • Knowledge and ability to use and interpret appropriate assessments and materials.
  • Knowledge of assistive listening technology.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and county special education regulations and program requirements.
  • Experience addressing parental questions and concerns.
  • Experience providing academic, language, and transition services in inclusive and pull-out environments.
  • Experience utilizing technology in an instructional environment.
  • Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and workflow technologies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to multi-task, work with interruptions, and work under pressure.
  • Dependable and punctual.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in a public school system.
Screening Duties
  • Conduct hearing screenings.
Consultation Duties
  • Contact principals, teachers, and parents regarding results of screenings and referrals.
  • Discuss needs of identified students with classroom teachers.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and support personnel regarding materials to assist qualifying students.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate agencies and physicians.
  • Correspond with appropriate agencies and physicians concerning students.
  • Participate in IEP, re-evaluation, and triennial meetings.
  • Perform listening checks on hearing equipment.
  • Collaborate with educational interpreters within the county.
Documentation Duties
  • Maintain student records, test data, and reports.
  • Inventory materials and equipment.
  • Perform appropriate educational testing needed for IEP development and progress monitoring.
Service Duties
  • Explain results of audiological evaluations and students' hearing loss as they relate to communication, educational development, and the classroom environment.
  • Provide the necessary services to meet the needs of individual students who qualify according to State regulations and guidelines inclusively and in a pull-out situation.
  • Provide individualized programs for assigned students through the development, implementation, and evaluation of the IEP (tutoring, teaching, interpreting).
  • Assist students in educational and personal development.
  • Provide Sign Language interpreting services for students when necessary.
  • Select assessment procedures that are valid and appropriate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality of information concerning students.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Order materials and equipment.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Travel between work sites and provide services at multiple locations.
  • Proctor tests and exams as needed.
  • Communicate with parents and staff and establish a positive atmosphere.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, twist, and reach for extended periods.
  • Communicate effectively—use expressive and receptive skills.
  • Lift or carry materials up to 20 pounds.
  • Maintain composure during stressful situations.
  • Possess physical and mental capability for supervisory responsibility of public school students.
Tools, Technology, and Equipment
  • Audiometers.
  • FM systems, sound field systems.
  • Specialty telecommunication, alerting and safety devices for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
  • Hearing Aids/Cochlear Implants.
  • Maintain an email account and respond to messages in a timely manner.
  • Smart board.
  • Computer — Google Suite.
FLSA Status

Exempt.

Salary

$53,889.00 – $87,325.91 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience.
