Position: Residential Associate (Full-time)

Casa Nuestra is an emergency shelter for youth with justice or child welfare contact, or at risk of homelessness who need temporary housing to avoid detention while waiting for more permanent housing, placement, or reunification with parent or guardian after a crisis event. Casa Nuestra will be available to youth who have either been arrested and/or referred to San Diego County's Alternatives to Detention (ATD) or the Community Assessment Team or Juvenile Diversion (CAT/JD), as well as homeless youth referred by community entities (e.g., churches, schools) or youth on Probation (Ward).

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide supervision, support, and respond to after hour needs of residents ages 12 - 17 residing at Casa Nuestra.
  • Work with youth, volunteers, and staff to maintain a positive, therapeutic housing/shelter environment.
  • Responsible for performing daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program.
  • Respond to medical and mental health emergencies as needed by conducting crisis intervention and de-escalation and/or contacting appropriate personnel.
  • Manage and distribute medication self- administered by residents as needed while following proper protocols.
  • Build good rapport with clients by demonstrating professional behavior and being a positive role model.
  • Explain program requirements and regulations to new youth and assure compliance of these regulations.
  • Monitor youth behavior and ensure youth are complying with program guidelines and procedures.
  • Prepare/exit shelter beds for clients. Facilitates sleeping arrangements and storage of personal items.
  • Completion of assigned shift assignments. (May include preparing intake packages, preparing meals, cleaning out rooms when youth exit, completing checklist to ensure compliance with CCL)
  • Ensure no unauthorized persons are on the property.
  • Ongoing and regular maintenance of specific facilities and equipment.
  • Attend and complete all required training and meetings.
  • Inspect rooms for cleanliness and educate youth on cleaning procedures and expectations.
  • Completion of reports, and communication with colleagues regarding shift updates and other required documents in a timely manner.
  • When working overnight shifts, conduct overnight bed checks, at a minimum of twice per shift, of each room and document.
  • As other duties assigned.

Requirements include:

  • Must have at least one of the following prior professional or educational experiences:
    • One year of full-time experience paid or volunteer, working with at-risk youth 14-17; OR
    • A minimum of 2 years working in a group home for children or youth; OR
    • At least 15 college semester or equivalent quarter units in behavioral science, including 9 units of courses related to children. Courses may include, but not limited the Correctional, Social Work, Psychological, Human Development or Social Work fields
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required.
  • Effective communication and listening skills to interact with residents and team members.
  • Must work well under pressure.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to act professionally at all times and as strong role model for residents.
  • Personable and friendly personality.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, possess cultural sensitivity, and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients.
