To ensure the safety of swimmers and enforce regulations at City pools; to assist or conduct instructional swimming classes for children and adults; to perform rescues and administer first aid; and to perform related duties as assigned. This is an entry‑level position in the Lifeguard series. Incumbents perform lifeguard tasks and may assist with organized swimming instruction. Upon successful completion of Water Safety Instructor Certification and satisfactory job performance, the Lifeguard I may advance to the Lifeguard II level, upon the recommendation of the supervisor.
This is a part‑time, non‑benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Unclassified hourly employees are paid on an hourly or per diem basis and shall not be eligible for benefits nor be subject to Civil Service Rules. Although hourly employees are at‑will, they are still subject to all other City policies and procedures.
EssentialFunctions
- Assist or conduct various instructional swimming classes for children and adults
- Evaluate the progress of class participants
- Supervise the activities of swimmers in and around a pool
- Ensure that policies, rules and regulations are observed so that no hazard to safety is created
- Rescue persons in distress or persons in danger of drowning
- Administer first aid in the event of an injury
- Perform life‑saving techniques
- Answer inquiries from the public
- Provide information pertaining to the pool regulations, facilities and programs
- Maintain records and logs
- Prepare reports
- Assist in the operations of swimming pools, related facilities and equipment
- Perform routine custodial and maintenance tasks
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co‑workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service

On a continuous basis, walk, stand, bend, crouch or stoop while supervising class participants; sit at a lifeguard tower for long periods of time; intermittently bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist; swim with proficiency and endurance; travel across wet, sloping surfaces; perform life‑saving techniques and rescues which would involve bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, grabbing, and lifting, pulling or carrying a child or adult out of the pool onto the deck;
pull, lift and store pool blankets, covers, reels and lane lines weighing up to 60 pounds; write or use keyboard to communicate through written means; perform routine custodial and maintenance tasks; verbal ability to communicate in person and by telephone in emergency and non‑emergency situations; must possess ability to read, interpret and write reports; must have sufficient eye sight and hearing to see and communicate across a pool in a noisy environment;
