General Statement of Duties:

The Surgical Technologist is responsible forassistingwith the delivery of qualitysurgicalcare throughplanning andanticipatingthe surgeon/procedure needs and coordinating with the circulating perioperative nurse during surgical procedures. Demonstratescompetency in surgical technology to include allmajor surgical specialty areas;includesgathering and preparingsterile supplies, equipment, preparing/maintaining the sterile field andassistingthe surgeon by supplyingsterile instruments/supplies tothe sterile field in a safe and efficient manner. Performs routine scrubroleaswellspecifically delegated department duties. Consistentlyfollowscurrent AORNand regulatory standards and established policies and procedures of the System.

Minimum Education, Experience,Training,Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:

• High School graduate or GED equivalent required.
• Graduate of asurgicaltechnologistprogram
  
  ORhires prior to 9/1/2009 may substitute with1-year experience in ahospital setting as a surgical technologist.

Per Texas HB 643, surgical technologistsenteringpractice after
09/01/2009 must have andmaintaina surgical technologist certification.

Individuals that performed in a surgical technologist position prior to 09/01/2009 are not required to obtain a surgical technologist certification.

2. CERTIFIED:

Must have and maintain

ONEof the following:

• CST–Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)(formally the Liaison Council on Certification for the Surgical Technologist)
  OR
• TS-C-Tech in Surgery, Certified through the National Center for Competency Testing(NCCT)

Essential Job Functions:

• Plansfor and obtainsthe equipment and suppliesneededfor assigned procedures according to physicians' preference and specific patient needs.

• Prepares equipment and supplies according to manufacturer's recommendations and specifications forusesduring surgical procedures.
  
  Opens sterile packs,instrument sand supplies for each procedure according toestablishedaseptic techniques and protocols.
