Job Summary And Qualifications

General Statement of Duties:

The Ultrasound Technologist (sonographer) performs diagnostic procedures utilizing a background in anatomy, physiology, physics and instrumentation to provide technical information to aid the physician. The sonographer will maintain technical skills needed to perform ultrasound procedures to include abdominal, OB/GYN, venous Doppler, small parts, pediatrics (where applicable) and invasive exams. In addition, the sonographer will maintain department supplies and equipment and will participate in the quality control of the ultrasound department.

Minimum Education , Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics
  • Education:

    ONE of the following:
    • New Hires as of October 1, 2011:
      • Successful completion of training program in either:
        • Ultrasonography
        • Radiologic Technology
        • Vascular Technology
        • Associates of Science or higher degree
      • Current employees:
        • Successful completion of training program in either:
          • Ultrasonography
          • Radiologic Technology
          • Vascular Technology
          • Medical Assisting
          • Associates degree or higher degree
      • Experience:

        none required
      • Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).

    Preferred:

    Two (2) years experience as a fulltime ultrasound technologist in a hospital or diagnostic imaging clinic setting preferred.

    • Minimum License, Certificates, or Registration

      Required:
      • American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
      • RDMS
        - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ABD or OBGYN)
      • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist ARRT (S)
      • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist ARRT (VS)
    AND ONE Of The Following
    • RVT
      - Registered Vascular Technologist or
    • Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RVS)
    Essential Job Functions
    • Maintains skills and understanding of innovation in techniques and equipment in medical sonography.
    • Assists physicians in performing ultrasound-guided biopsies and other invasive procedures.
    • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
    • Responsible for the proper use of the Radiology Computer System (scheduling exams, patient tracking, film tracking, proper completion of exams, capture charges).
    • Follows safety policies and procedures applicable to the job, recognizes impending crisis situations and institutes measures (such as adjusting priorities) to prevent further complications.
    • Understands and follows infection control/universal precautions in the performance of all job tasks. Maintains order and cleanliness. Always practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination.
