Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries, founded in 1916, is one of the largest providers of rehabilitation services in the State of Ohio. Utilizing our retail store network, we generate sales revenue to support thousands of individuals with disabilities and homeless local veterans.

The Staff Accountant performs a variety of professional accounting duties to support the organization's financial operations. This role will require a combination of problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication to develop innovative solutions that drive business success. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, assisting with month-end and year-end close processes, and supporting financial reporting and audit activities.

Reporting to the Controller, the Staff Accountant works collaboratively with departments across the organization to ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and timely while maintaining strong internal controls and exceptional customer service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required.
  • One to three years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Internship or public accounting experience is a plus.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with HUD annual monitoring and VA SF425 reporting and audits.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Develop and implement effective solutions to complex problems.
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with accounting or ERP software preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, integrity, and professionalism when handling confidential financial information.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

General Accounting

  • Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and other assigned accounts.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Maintain fixed asset, lease and depreciation ledgers in accordance with GAAP (ASC 360 & 842).
  • Ensure financial transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements.
  • Monitor grant budgets, track restricted funds, and review expenses for regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation and assist with STEH annual monitoring and VA SF425 reporting audits.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and reconciling items.
  • Willingness to cross-train with AR and AP and support as needed.
  • Prepare recurring financial reports and schedules.
  • Assist with budget-to-actual variance reporting.
  • Compile supporting documentation for management reporting.
  • Maintain organized accounting records and documentation.

Audit & Compliance

  • Assist in preparation of schedules and documentation for annual financial audits.
  • Support grant reporting and compliance activities, when applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational accounting policies and internal controls.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial and employee information.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiencies.
  • Assist with implementation of new accounting procedures and financial systems.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
