The Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children, established in 2000, evaluates more than 2,000 children per year for whom abuse is suspected from 22 Ohio counties, as well as Kentucky and Indiana. The center collaborates with community partners in the investigation and treatment of victims at its 5,000-square-foot facility on Cincinnati Children’s Oak Campus. It is accredited by the National Children’s Alliance and operates as a Child Advocacy Center within a children’s hospital.
The center implements trauma-minimizing practices in a multi-disciplinary environment including physicians, psychologists, social workers, forensic nurses, child protection workers, and law enforcement. Clinical responsibilities extend to children admitted to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center when abuse concerns are raised, with 24/7 coverage for inpatient care and collaboration with forensic nursing in the ED. The center’s goals include keeping children safe, identifying harmed children, preventing abuse and neglect, and improving outcomes for children exposed to trauma and violence.
We conduct research that informs interventions, assessments, treatments, and teaching. Our work has helped define the national standard for evaluating and treating victims of child abuse and maltreatment. Areas include child forensic interviews, improving medical evaluations to identify abuse, and using parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) to reduce behavioral issues in trauma-exposed youth. Our findings inform patient care and help implement trauma-informed practices throughout Cincinnati Children’s.
Research results are used to train law enforcement, child services workers, school staff, and other trusted adults in the community.
The Mayerson Center provides training on childhood trauma, adverse experiences, toxic stress, and trauma-informed practices in healthcare and early childhood settings. The center offers a three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship preparing physicians for academic and clinical careers in child abuse, including clinical care, research, teaching, and administration.
Advocacy and ProgramsThe Mayerson Center started and continues to lead Joining Forces for Children, a coalition working to prevent and reduce trauma impact in the greater Cincinnati area. Our advocacy has yielded outcomes such as community engagement techniques, ethical academic-community partnerships, and tools like the Family Wellness Survey. Strong Resilient Youth, an online trauma-informed skills training developed with McKinsey Health Institute, is available in multiple languages to support adults working with children and families locally and internationally.
