About The Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a Senior Lab Associate staff position who will provide support activities related to the research and/or teaching missions of the Department of Biological Sciences. The Senior Lab Associate will administer the operational policies and procedures of designated laboratories and the integration of these lab activities with community needs.

These needs include organizing, prepping, and assisting with the first year Introductory Biology and Cell Biology instructional labs. Coordination of these laboratories with the lecture instructors and expected interactions with graduate students and/or adjunct faculty.

Job Overview

Ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment. Preparing all lab materials needed for multiple teaching lab rooms. Setting up and breaking down equipment and experiments as well as restocking supplies for individual lab sections. Washing glassware and cleaning benches. Preparing reagents, chemical solutions, and culture media according to standard formulas. Opening and sorting laboratory specimen packages that contain plants and/or animals. Maintaining living specimens: including, but not limited to bean beetles, planaria, termites, crickets, and drosophila.

Managing an inventory system of all lab supplies and special equipment. Budgeting allocated resources and funds for academic year. Occasional instruction for a lab meeting may be required. Additional courses may require occasional assistance on a case-by-case basis. The Senior Lab Associate must have a working knowledge of biology/cell biology/ecology and evolution and genetics. An understanding of chemical properties and hazards, DNA extraction and/or isolation, aseptic techniques, and proper use of biology-related/molecular or cell biology equipment such as balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, centrifuges, and thermal cyclers.

The position is a full-time, 12-month staff position and requires flexibility throughout the work week, including some laboratory work over the weekends. Job description is subject to change according to the needs of the Department.

The department has approximately 1,600 undergraduate students and a strong interest in pedagogical techniques and research experiences that enhance student success. The university also has instructional support services such as the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, the Faculty Enrichment Center, and the University Learning Commons, and close relationships with local organizations, such as the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, the Cincinnati Museum Center, and the nearby US Environmental Protection Agency's National Exposure Research Laboratory.
