Job Overview

The successful applicant for this position will be able to manage, prepare and assist instruction of two large undergraduate Microbiology laboratory courses (approximately 400 students per semester). Duties include, but are not limited to: setting up, re-stocking, and resetting teaching labs; washing and disinfecting laboratory glassware; treatment and disposal of biohazardous waste; growth and maintenance of bacterial cultures; preparing and dispensing bacterial cultures for student use;

updating labs and procedures, operating the Canvas Learning Management Software; instructing laboratory sections; and use/maintenance of standard lab equipment including autoclaves, microscopes, balances, and dishwashers.

This is a 12-month staff position, which will include assigned duties from the department head, based on need, during the summer period. Additional responsibilities include holding office hours to meet with students, replying to student communications in a timely manner and coordinating and collaborating with faculty, students and staff teaching and supporting the course.

Essential Functions

  • Assist in all aspects of running large Microbiology teaching laboratories
  • Preparation of all materials for Microbiology teaching laboratories, including administrative items (e.g., course organization and restructuring).
  • Prepare, supervise and troubleshoot the use of lab equipment and/or experiments.
  • Perform additional duties (e.g., safety assessment) based on departmental need.

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Two (2) years of experience in Microbiology Labs and/or aseptic technique.
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in a Natural Science field (General Biology, Microbiology, or related field)
