Overview
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College invites applications for a full-time, Annually Contracted Instructor of Biology position at our Main Campus location. We welcome candidates with experience in teaching college-level courses to our diverse technical, transfer degree and non-degree seeking students in our Health and Public Safety Division in areas of the Biological Sciences such as General Biology (both majors and non‑majors level), Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, or other interdisciplinary biological/life science courses.
Instruction may include face‑to‑face, hybrid, or online modalities and may include evenings and weekends as needed.
- Teach assigned courses following established course descriptions, course objectives and syllabi
- Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs
- Promote student success in their courses by providing academic advice to students.
- Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods
- Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them of their progress in the course in a timely manner
- Keep accurate student records and submit related reports and forms within requested timelines
- Review, evaluate, and recommend student textbooks and learning materials
- Use equipment and facilities responsibly and courteously. Where appropriate, assist the chair with the routine maintenance of instructional laboratories
- Plan, develop, and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and which are appropriate for students with diverse needs
- Master's degree or PhD from an accredited college or university in Biology, Life Sciences, Science Education or related Life Science field with an emphasis (at least 18 graduate credits) in Biological Science fields or related cohesive set of experience
- 3 years' experience teaching biological or health sciences at a post-secondary institution (i.e. community college, 4-year college or university)
- Expertise in at least one of the following courses:
General Biology (majors and non‑majors), Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, or other interdisciplinary biological life science - Experience utilizing various methods of instruction as well as innovative instructional/academic support systems and programs
- Competence and interest in the use of technology in the classroom and willingness to explore new instructional methodologies
- Practical/laboratory instructional experience including dissections and other academic procedures in an educational setting
- Experience with or ability to learn to use the College’s Learning Management System (i.e. Brightspace or similar)
- Strong commitment to student excellence and outcomes
- 2 years’ experience teaching biological or health science at a community college serving a diverse student population
- Experience and interest in using evidence-based instructional methods and program (such as ACUE or QM), department, or institutional learning assessment processes and accreditation
- Familiarity with Ohio’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program and basic responsibilities of the College for overseeing curriculum alignment at CCP partner high school locations
- Experience with the development and facilitation of online courses
- Proficiency utilizing Brightspace learning management system
- Experience with course design and evaluation
- Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive work environment
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse professional, community, and student population
- Sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio‑economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities
- Ability to inspire and motivate students in a learning-centered environment.
- Self-disciplined and ability to effectively manage others
- Good organizational and planning skills
- Knowledge and skill using a variety of computers and software
