Assist students with blindness and visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, efficient travel within a variety of settings. The COMS travels to the students’ assigned schools or other locations to provide direct and/or consultative special education services related to vision loss. The COMS serves students from pre‑school through high school with blindness, vision loss, and accompanying disabilities.
Community‑based services and bus/transportation training are critical components of the O & M program.
- Perform functional vision evaluations and learning media assessments on new referrals and re‑evaluations as requested. Write and interpret reports.
- Interpret eye medical reports as they relate to educational environments.
- Assess how visual impairment may affect school or community travel.
- Determine eligibility and appropriate placement of students with visual impairment per Ohio definition of visual impairment and special education.
- Comply with local, state, and federal due process regulations.
- Collaborate with local school district administrators, teachers, parents, and other team members.
- Orient classroom teachers to the unique travel needs of students with visual impairments.
- Provide orientation and mobility instruction to students in a variety of settings and needs.
- Write measurable goals and objectives for individual students and monitor progress with data reporting for the district.
- Assist in modifying classroom and school environments for students with visual impairment.
- Provide training in optical aids, concept development, and cane travel when appropriate.
- Participate in transition processes for early childhood and high school students and work with agencies to promote smooth transitions.
- Recommend specialized equipment for student travel needs.
- Give direct instruction to students per IEP goals and objectives.
- Maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and own transportation; obtain necessary training and updates for Van Driver’s License (ODE rules).
- Submit all student billing, travel forms, leave requests, and reports by stipulated deadlines.
- Maintain confidentiality of students and comply with HCESC policy and procedures.
- Maintain professional currency through yearly growth and development.
- Instruct students with visual impairments in residential, business, and public transportation areas.
- Transport students to teaching locations.
- Write weekly lesson plans and maintain student progress data.
- Adhere to HCESC attendance policy and manage conflict with professionalism.
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Special Education.
- Current Ohio Pupil Services License – COMS AER/Academy certification.
- Ability to travel to various locations on a daily basis.
Salary to be established by the Board.
$5,000 hiring bonus available for candidates who complete the hiring process and accept a position of at least 3/5 time. Full terms and conditions will be discussed during the hiring process.
