The Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science invites applications for multiple full‑time, non‑tenure track Professor – Educator or Professor of Practice positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology Programs. Salary and rank will be commensurate with credentials.
Essential FunctionsFaculty in the role of an Assistant/Associate Professor – Educator:
- Deliver high‑quality, effective, innovative engineering pedagogy and student mentorship.
- Continuously improve the undergraduate curriculum and accreditation assessment.
Faculty in the role of an Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice:
- Provide instruction directly incorporating professional industrial experience to bridge the academic/industry divide.
- Establish and maintain experiential learning throughout the undergraduate curriculum, including linking students’ co‑op experiences with classroom learning.
For both Assistant/Associate Professor – Educator and Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice:
- Appointments are primarily focused on undergraduate teaching, accompanied by service expectations.
- Teaching expectations are determined by workload policies for undergraduate mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology courses for each primary semester (faculty have two primary semesters: Spring/Summer, Summer/Fall, or Fall/Spring; the third is a secondary, non‑teaching semester). Instructional delivery may be in a traditional classroom and/or laboratory setting.
- Service expectations include activities such as committee membership, student mentoring, student group advising, accreditation assessment, and curriculum/program development.
For an appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor – Educator, the following is required prior to the effective date of the appointment:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
For an appointment as Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, one of the following is required prior to the effective date of the appointment:
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and six (6) years of direct experience practicing the discipline of Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related field) in industry.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and eight (8) years of direct experience practicing the discipline of Mechanical Engineering (or a closely related field) in industry.
