Position Overview

Algebra I is a gateway course that serves as the foundation for advanced mathematics, college readiness, and future career success. Through this innovative pilot program, Cincinnati Public Schools is investing in new instructional models designed to increase student achievement, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and improve long-term academic outcomes. Educational Specialists will serve as founding members of this pilot initiative, partnering with teachers and instructional leaders to provide targeted support that helps students master essential Algebra I concepts.

This role offers a unique opportunity to directly influence student success while helping shape instructional practices that may inform future mathematics programming across the district.

Cincinnati Public Schools is seeking three Educational Specialists to launch its new Algebra I Pilot Program. One Educational Specialist will be assigned to each participating high school (Withrow and Western Hills University High School). Educational Specialists serve as collaborative instructional partners, working alongside Algebra I classroom teachers to deliver standards-based instructional support that promotes student engagement, conceptual understanding, and mastery of Algebra I content.

This role is ideal for educators who are passionate about mathematics, believe in the power of collaborative teaching, and want to contribute to an innovative instructional model designed to transform Algebra I outcomes for Cincinnati Public Schools students.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Deliver targeted, standards-aligned instructional support to individual students and small groups.
  • Facilitate engaging, hands-on mini-lessons that reinforce priority Algebra I concepts and learning standards.
  • Utilize instructional strategies that build conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, and student confidence.
  • Support differentiated learning experiences that meet the diverse academic needs of students.
  • Reinforce key learning targets through interactive instructional practices and standards-based interventions.

Teacher Collaboration

  • Serve as an instructional partner alongside the assigned Algebra I classroom teacher.
  • Collaborate with teachers three to four times per week to plan instruction aligned with the district's Instructional Framework.
  • Assist in implementing Spaced Practice routines and other evidence-based instructional strategies that improve student retention and mastery.
  • Contribute ideas and instructional resources that strengthen classroom instruction and student engagement.

Data-Driven Instruction

  • Monitor student progress toward mastery of priority Algebra I standards.
  • Analyze lesson checks, quizzes, formative assessments, and other student data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Support teachers in organizing differentiated learning stations based on student performance.
  • Help identify instructional trends and recommend supports that accelerate student growth.

Classroom Environment

  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and academically rigorous classroom culture.
  • Build meaningful relationships with students that encourage confidence, persistence, and ownership of learning.
  • Support classroom routines that maximize instructional time and student engagement.
  • Help maintain an organized learning environment that promotes collaboration and academic success.

Professional Learning & Instructional Resources

  • Participate actively in district and school-based Professional Learning Experiences.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve instructional practice.
