Job Overview
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for the position of College Laboratory Manager. This critical role supports and enhances undergraduate laboratory instruction by ensuring laboratory courses run smoothly, safely, and effectively across multiple teaching lab spaces. The College Laboratory Manager oversees all aspects of laboratory preparation, inventory, chemical and equipment procurement, laboratory safety, and student support.
They also coordinate and advise on departmental safety practices and serve as a key liaison between instructional, research, and administrative personnel.
Essential Functions
- • Prepare, set up, and tear down experiments for multiple undergraduate lab courses, across seven laboratory spaces
• Make and distribute laboratory reagents and solvents in appropriate quantities.
• Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free lab environments throughout the day.
• Ensure all labs are stocked with adequate PPE and materials prior to class.
• Coordinate closely with faculty and TAs to support course delivery and troubleshoot issues during lab sessions.
• Communicate effectively with students and instructors to arrange make-up experiments and other student accommodations.
Inventory and Procurement
• Manage an inventory and procure chemicals, supplies, equipment, and consumables for teaching labs.
• Perform regular chemical inventory audits and coordinate the proper disposal of outdated or hazardous materials.
• Allocate and reconcile purchasing card expenses and manage monthly reporting using SAP Concur.
Safety and Compliance Leadership
• Monitor and enforce lab safety practices among students, TAs, and instructors.
• Train all new department personnel (faculty, staff, and students) on laboratory and building safety protocols.
• Lead incident investigations and distribute findings to improve future safety outcomes.
• Collaborate with faculty and researchers to develop safety documentation (SOPs, safety plans).
• Serve as liaison with EH&S, coordinate hazardous waste labeling and storage, and maintain compliance with all relevant regulations.
Supervision and Training
• Hire, train, schedule, and supervise undergraduate student employees.
Instrument and Facility Maintenance
• Troubleshoot IT and equipment issues during lab sessions.
• Maintain instructional lab instrumentation and coordinate professional repairs as necessary.
• Submit facilities work orders and follow through to resolution.
- Bachelor’s Degree must be in a relevant field.
- Seven (7) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.
Some positions may require a current RN license to practice in the state of Ohio.
