Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARY:
The Senior R+D Mechanical Engineer will be part of a team developing new products for the medical diagnostics market. In this role, the Senior Mechanical Engineer serves as the mechanical lead for diagnostic products, responsible for end-to-end mechanical development from concept through production. This includes designing, developing, testing, and improving mechanical components, assemblies, and systems. The Senior Mechanical Engineer solves challenging and complex problems, communicates technical vision to internal and external stakeholders, and drives the creation of significant and impactful intellectual property.
This also includes the opportunity to shape the technical direction of the organization and lead initiatives to enhance our engineering methods and processes.
ESSENTIAL/PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Leads mechanical development for next-generation vital signs and digital diagnostic devices, balancing usability, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Formulates solutions to complex and ambiguous problems that aren't well defined. Incorporates feedback and solutions from others.
- Leads mechanical verification and reliability testing.
- Owns technical relationships with external suppliers, tooling partners, and manufacturing teams.
Communicates complex technical ideas and decisions to cross-functional teams and leadership through daily work, reviews, and presentations. Drives alignment on technical direction and organizational goals.
Guides IP strategy within projects and teams. Leads efforts to create IP assets that drive innovation and market differentiation.
Mentors junior engineers in best mechanical engineering practices.
Collaborates with tooling engineers and designers to select the optimal process for a given product, based on factors such as cost, quality, quantity, and functionality.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Ensures that drawings adhere to established standards.
- Using DFM principles, optimizes the design of the medical device, which involves complex components and sub-systems. Communicates with the suppliers and production teams.
- Influences change across disciplines and functions.
- Establishes standardized processes, analyzes process metrics.
- Provides technical review expertise across functional areas.
EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field and 6+ years of experience, or equivalent combination of both. Experience in medical or other highly regulated industry is preferred.
COMPETENCY and/or SKILL:
- Ability to lead the design of complex, interconnected systems and shape the organization's technical direction
- Ability to operate independently and make sound technical decisions with limited mechanical peer support
- Ability to effectively communicate technical strategies and decisions to executives
- Proficiency in creating complex 3D models, parametric design, assembly modeling, and surface modeling
- Proficiency in surface modeling to ensure that mechanical components fit seamlessly together and meet aesthetic requirements
Ability to setup, run and analyze static linear and non-linear FEA
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to level II and level III engineers. May have direct reports.
