Overview

The Sr. Engineering Manager – Optics and Imaging Technology reports directly to the Advanced Measurements Technologies Section Leader. This manager will lead the Optics and Imaging engineering team, a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and technical specialists. The role partners with staff and teams in Product Validation and Flight Test Operation (FTO), suppliers, and airframe customers to drive technology maturation plans to closure ahead of multiple commercial and military technology demonstrator programs for GE Aerospace.

This position may have management and leadership responsibility for exempt employees, non-exempt employees, contingent workers and purchased services.

In this role, you will be responsible for major and complex assignments with long-term business implications, manage complex issues within functional area(s) of expertise, and contribute to the overall business strategy. You will lead activities contributing to the design and development of products, solutions, and systems. High levels of operational judgment are required to achieve outcomes and you will oversee the team’s ability to achieve technology excellence and delivery.

You must drive initiatives to improve the effectiveness of the team and interface with other functions to provide coordination of metrics, dashboards, functional processes, and cross-functional initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ensure on-time delivery of technology maturation projects to perform stated test missions within accuracy expectations.
  • Manage a team across several engineering disciplines supporting technology maturation projects. Provide leadership and technical direction for assigned program tasks and personnel.
  • Establish work group goals within the framework of section technical and financial objectives. Define roles and responsibilities for assigned personnel.
  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts within the group to assure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work and reviews, appropriate use of resources, and responsiveness to customer/program needs.
  • Identify the need for technical and program reviews; lead technical reviews and participate as a reviewer. Ensure proper documentation of technical data for assigned projects in accordance with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Formulate and implement plans to meet technical and program requirements, schedules, and contract commitments. Monitor and communicate project status, business issues, and significant developments as appropriate.
  • Communicate difficult concepts and influence others’ options on topics; guide others to consider alternate viewpoints.
  • Interpret internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve products, processes, or services. Stay informed of industry trends that may inform work.
  • Influence the development of strategy for the area of responsibility, including resource control and policy formulation.
  • Facilitate communication of technical and project information between organizations and within the work group.
  • Execute and provide guidance for analysis/evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards and product/program requirements.
  • Define and develop product processes related to design, analysis, test, materials, manufacture, quality and/or productivity.
  • Communicate with management on technical, organizational, resource and personnel issues.
  • Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback, training, coaching, counseling, and assignments.
  • Ensure company compliance initiatives and training requirements are implemented within the work group.
  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to problems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited university or college in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Optics or Physics).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a technical or engineering leadership position.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in optical measurements, imaging (Infrared/high speed), embedded electronics, and opto-mechanics.
