This employee performs entry-level technical work within an engineering unit of the city; assignments include tracing and simple drafting, plan reproduction, information research, and/or field work concentrated in assisting in surveying equipment set up, using a survey rod, and taking routine survey measurements under close direction; assignments may vary to meet the seasonal requirements of the unit; may be assigned work of routine difficulty or to assist higher Technicians on work of greater complexity.
Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge Of- Basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry in order to perform mathematical calculations required to determine and verify line and grade, areas, weights, volumes, quantities, costs, and related information.
- Correct English usage in oral and written communications.
- Introductory engineering drafting principles and techniques.
- Safety policies and procedures, e.g., Employee Safety Instruction Manual and applicable agency requirements.
- Use basic computer programs, including Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Hold a survey rod erect in order to obtain accurate measurements.
- Properly and safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Use correct English in the preparation of reports and letters pertaining to work performed.
- Perform strenuous physical work (lifting heavy objects such as manhole covers, pounding stakes, clearing brush).
- Follow oral and written instructions including directions from supervisors, work assignments and schedules, safety precautions, and legal descriptions.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, the public, and private contractors.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Walk considerable distances over rough terrain.
Each applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of high school, technical institute, or college-level classes in algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, and introductory drafting or mechanical drawing are preferred.
Military Education & Experience EvaluationMilitary education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
