Position: Staff Electrical Design Engineer - R&D

Ethicon Endo Surgery Inc., a member of Johnson & Johnson, is recruiting for a Staff Electrical Design Engineer, R&D. It is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The role will contribute to the New Product Development pipeline and transform patient care through innovation. Key responsibilities include designing and managing printed circuit board assemblies, documenting designs per control processes, developing embedded software, leading root cause investigations, collaborating on hardware verification, testing, and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the design, manufacturing, and lifecycle of a Printed Circuit Board Assembly critical to the capital device functionality.
  • Document designs, specifications, and requirements per design control processes.
  • Drive the design, development, and debugging of embedded product software to integrate with mechanical, electrical, and distributed computing systems.
  • Lead root‑cause investigations on electrical and software related issues during prototype and production.
  • Own the hardware verification strategy with Manufacturing and Test Engineers to implement automated testing.
  • Lead the external standards testing efforts for the capital equipment.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff to expand design team capabilities and establish good working practices.
  • Support up to 10% domestic and international travel.
Qualifications Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • Results‑driven approach with strong accountability.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of electrical engineering experience in a direct role.
  • Experience in PCBA design, manufacturing, troubleshooting.
  • Embedded electrical design experience.
  • Proficiency in Cadence or Altium for circuit design, simulation, and analysis.
  • Understanding of board‑level design and signal integrity.
  • Strong collaboration, technical leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work across subjects with internal and external partners.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • Design control experience.
  • Debugging embedded hardware systems.
  • FPGA design and test experience (System Verilog or VHDL).
  • Experience with communication protocols such as Bluetooth, SPI, I²C, USB, UART, USART.
  • Experience with distributed data services (RTI Connext, OpenDDS, MQTT, etc.).
  • Familiarity with IEC 60601‑1 and related medical device standards.
  • Experience with CANO

    pen communication.
  • Experience with QNX and Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity threat assessment and mitigation.
  • Use of Agile methodology.
Compensation and Benefits

Base pay range: $ to $. The position is eligible for a performance bonus and a long‑term incentive program.

Employees may participate in medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term and long‑term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. The company’s retirement plan includes a pension and a 401(k) savings plan, and employees may also contribute to a long‑term incentive program.

Time off benefits include up to 120 hours of vacation per calendar year, up to 40 hours of sick time, up to 13 days of holiday pay per calendar year, and up to 40 hours of work, personal and family time per year.
