The company designs and integrates highly advanced machining systems and automation cells incorporating robotics, vision systems, conveyors, and automated material handling to support high-precision manufacturing environments.
Position Overview
The Controls Engineer will support the design, programming, integration, and commissioning of automated machining systems. These systems integrate CNC machining centers with robotics, vision systems, conveyors, and other automation technologies to automate material flow through manufacturing cells.
Working within a project engineering team, this role supports the full lifecycle of automation projects—from system design and programming through testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. The Controls Engineer will collaborate closely with internal engineering teams, external suppliers, and customers to ensure successful delivery of automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Support implementation of automated machining systems integrating CNC equipment, robotics, vision systems, and material handling equipment
- Develop and modify PLC programs using platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Omron, or Mitsubishi
- Develop and modify robot programming applications for Fanuc and/or ABB robots
- Create and modify HMI applications supporting automation systems
- Configure and test machine vision applications including barcode and pattern recognition systems
- Teach robot tool center points, user frames, and pick/place positions
- Debug PLC, robot, HMI, and vision programs during system testing and commissioning
- Support electrical design activities including I/O strategy and component selection
- Collaborate with internal engineering teams, suppliers, and customers throughout project execution
- Participate in risk assessments and help ensure compliance with safety standards
- Document system functionality and create user manuals for installed systems
- Travel: 50-75%, primarily across the Midwest, with some national/international trips (1.5x OT after 45 hours when traveling)
Required Qualifications
- Experience programming or troubleshooting PLC-based automation systems
- Experience programming or modifying industrial robots (Fanuc and/or ABB)
- Experience working with HMI development platforms
- Familiarity with industrial vision systems such as Cognex or Keyence
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and automation system documentation
- Understanding of industrial automation safety devices such as light curtains and laser scanners
- Knowledge of industrial standards such as OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, UL, ISO, or CE
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Associate’s degree focused on Industrial Automation, Controls, or Mechatronics with relevant experience
- Experience working with industrial automation systems, robotics integration, or advanced manufacturing environments
