General Statement of Duties
The Metropolitan Sewer District is posting College Co‑Op positions for the Summer Semester 2026. Applicants should have availability for 32–40 hours per week. Interns/Co‑ops/Externs may perform duties across the City of Cincinnati in office or field settings, based on interests, degree programs, or organizational needs. Candidates should be able to multitask in a fast‑paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)MSD Division of Compliance Services – Environmental/Consent Decree
Mission: To attract and cultivate bright college students and maintain partnerships with colleges, exposing them to applied principles and career opportunities in water resource management and environmental sciences.
Purpose: Co‑ops assist Health, Safety, Sustainability & Environmental (HSSE) Branch engineers and scientists on projects such as environmental compliance, discharge assessment, overflow reporting, facility inspections, and record‑keeping.
Overview: This position is part of the Environmental Section within MSD’s Compliance Services Division. The student co‑op will support Environmental Program Managers/subject matter experts managing the following programs:
- Air quality & permit compliance (Title V/Permit‑by‑Rules)
- Water quality and discharge assessment (NPDES, stormwater, bioassessments, overflow reporting)
- Spill prevention control and countermeasures (SPCC) compliance
- Due diligence and site remediation
- RCRA waste management (hazardous, non‑hazardous, universal wastes)
- Pollution prevention
- Energy efficiency
Co‑ops will learn components of environmental compliance including:
- Air permitting (Title V & Permit‑by‑Rule)
- Water quality & NPDES compliance
- Oil pollution prevention and SPCC rule requirements
- Chemical inventory reporting (Tier II)
- Stormwater pollution prevention
- Environmental compliance auditing/inspections
- Sustainability
- Public speaking
- Database management
- Sampling methods
Deliverables:
- Assist environmental staff across MSD divisions and perform related tasks as needed.
- Assist in exposure to all facets of regulatory compliance program management during the term.
Budget and Compensation: Salary for the student; scheduled to work from May to August.
Logistics: Student will work in the MSD Administration Building, 1st floor.
Training: Student will receive training on PPE use, Microsoft Office applications, and other required skills.
Project Timeline (Education and Learning Milestones)- Week 1 – Orientation
- Week 2 – Needs Assessment
- Weeks 1‑3 – Begin Project Work
- Weeks 4‑14 – Continuation of Project Work, mid‑term review at week 8
- Weeks 15‑16 – Final documentation, report out, and project closure
Students will also provide documentation and discuss with necessary parties to enable continuation of unfinished work and summarize lessons learned.
Learning Education Requirements- Undergraduate student
- Major – Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Chemistry, Biology, or closely related field
- Preferred skills:
Excel, Word, AutoCAD/GIS
Education and Experience
- Be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or non‑citizen with proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
- Individuals under eighteen will require a work permit.
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution.
- Submit a City job application for employment.
- Must pass a drug screen and background check.
