Overview:
The Mortgage Underwriting Manager will direct a team of underwriters and processors to assess applications, evaluate risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations, company and investor guidelines. This role requires demonstrating decision-making skills, analytical thinking, communication, interpersonal abilities and leadership.
Essential Responsibilities- Manage the daily workflow of Mortgage Underwriters and Mortgage Processors and ensure GECU KPIs and SLAs are achieved
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained
- Deliver timely, constructive performance evaluations
- Administer employee discipline in accordance with policy
- Ensure personnel comply with attendance policies
- Provide ongoing coaching and training for direct reports
- Ensure processing and underwriting are completed timely and efficiently while delivering exceptional member service
- Collaborate with GECU team members to promote cooperation across the mortgage function.
- Underwrite a full range of mortgage loans with the highest lending authority, including complex/jumbo/large balance portfolio loans
- Maintain a broad knowledge of first mortgage refinances, purchases, construction, HELOCs, fixed-rate Home Equity loans, Equity Rich fixed-rate loans, and Equity Rich lines of credit transactions
- Review and verify loan applications and supporting documentation for income, collateral and creditworthiness based on program and product specifications
- Review property appraisals to confirm collateral value is properly documented
- Ensure loans comply with current secondary market standards and GECU portfolio guidelines
- Ensure underwriting practices are compliant under fair lending requirements
- Must understand and comply with all required federal and state regulations associated with this position
- High School diploma or GED required
- Minimum of ten years mortgage underwriting experience
- Prior leadership experience required
- Professional verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills-ability to work well with others
- Strong time management and organizational skills who can work in a fast-paced environment
- Analytical and critical review skills
- Ability to exhibit a positive attitude and professional demeanor and can lead by example
- Must be proficient in Secondary Market guidelines, such as FHLMC and FHLB.
- Experienced in underwriting a variety of government mortgage loan types, including FHA and VA loans.
- Understand and follow mortgage-related operational procedures
- Must maintain the required NMLS designation.
