Summary

Exercises authority commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and is directly accountable to the Police Chief.

Supervision Exercised

Assists the Police Chief in the management and supervision of all personnel within the department. In the absence of the Police Chief, the Assistant Police Chief assumes the Police Chief’s responsibilities.

Education / Work Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least 10 years of police experience
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Successful completion of a recognized executive law enforcement leadership program, or completion of such a program within eighteen (18) months of appointment. Examples include the FBI National Academy, Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA), Southern Police Institute, Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE), or Police Executive Leadership College (PELC).

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to effectively present information to township officials and/or township department heads
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions

The Assistant Police Chief’s work schedule shall be determined by the operational needs of the department. The incumbent must be available to respond and assume command during major incidents, critical events, emergencies, and other situations requiring executive oversight.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Becomes familiar with administrative policy and executes the service programs of the department.
  • Examines reports for conformity with the procedure for complete investigation and reporting, referring improper or incomplete reports in reverse order though original channels for correction and explanation of failure.
  • Enforces and promotes high ethical standards in the operations and conduct of department personnel.
  • Collaborates with supervisors for the purpose of:
    • Organizing and conducting a progressive program of personnel training
    • Improving personnel working conditions for maximum efficiency and morale
    • Adequately recognizing outstanding personnel performance
    • Improving efficiency and cooperation in areas of common responsibility
    • Advancing public relations to promote public confidence and support
  • Oversees and manages investigations involving alleged misconduct by department personnel and prepares related reports.
  • Assists with inquiries and investigations involving members of the department, or other special investigations at the direction of the Police Chief or where need is indicated.
  • Oversees at all times the affairs of the department and assures that the duties of subordinates are properly discharged.
  • Exercises general supervision and inspection of public places within the Township and ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and resolutions.
  • Ensures prompt reporting to proper authorities of any instances of negligence, violation of law or other matter falling within the jurisdiction of any other Township department.
  • Submits to the Police Chief, in prescribed form and detail, such reports as may be required to accurately reflect the problems, services and activities of the various units in the department.
  • Plans and executes a police service program designed to prevent and repress crime, apprehend and prosecute criminal offenders, and recover property.
  • Uses crime trends and other statistics and data as a basis for policy recommendations or decisions for tactical deployment of resources and direction of department operations.
  • Remains an active working liaison with the county coroner, county prosecutor, judges and with other governmental and private agencies concerned with criminal matters, crime prevention, law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
